The Tumithak Class - A newb's first shot at this

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

The Tumithak Class - A newb's first shot at this

Post by Corvid »

I'm not a regular here or anything (just signed up, actually), but I've been playing with the ship builder for a little while, and here's my first real attempt at making a decent battleship. Uh . . . be gentle?

The first model is the Tumithak Mk.I:

Next is the Tumithak Mk.IIIa, which is equipped with retractable main guns and a redesigned nose.

I figured out how to animate sections doing this one. Besides the retractable guns, the upgraded plasma cannon on the nose has a recoil that I think came out rather nicely.

This one's the Tumithak Mk.V, which sacrifices most of its main weaponry for one immensely powerful beam weapon that takes up the entire nose:

(In case you're wondering, the missing designations were "failed prototypes.")

The Tumithak class also includes an unarmed heavy freighter:

(which is perfect for target practice)

And naturally, it wasn't long until the Tumithak freighter fell into the hands of pirates:

So . . . what do you think?

Not bad for a first ship, I like the engine section but the front is not so appealing with the repetition of the large sections. Also the weapons take up too much space on the ship, you might want to remove some.

I think that the beam version is definitely the best. Colouration isn't so great, but I really can't complain about structure, especially on the beam version. Not a bad start, welcome to the forums!

Thanks! I know what you mean about the coloring - I made the mistake of doing the ship in the default team colors. That wouldn't be bad if you could adjust the luminosity or saturation of the default colors, but you're stuck with only red-green-blue sliders. The parts that I would have made a less saturated shade of red ended up just being darker. Also, it seems that in the sandbox, sections are brighter the closer they are to the core, right? That looks a bit odd, especially with the Mk.V. The long nose is far enough out that it looks pinkish instead of dark red.

As for the repetition of large sections, I'm not quite sure what you mean. I agree that the sections holding the main cannons on the first ship are pretty blocky-looking, and the guns are kind of obtrusive, which is why I made them retractable in the next model.

Very nice job, Corvid, the ship looks awesome. IMO, the Mk. V looks the coolest.
Behind every great man, there is a battleship that dwarfs a planet.
