I feel stupid asking, but...
I know that, with anything that has lasted over a year, there are always unwritten rules that everyone knows. What are they in ship building? Thank you.

Cruise the forums. Particularly the Custom Ships section. See what people react well too, and what people hate. Also check out the Beauty Pageant.Freiberg wrote:I know that, with anything that has lasted over a year, there are always unwritten rules that everyone knows. What are they in ship building? 1. Don't overuse Aegis deflectors <-- first sign of a noob.
2. Make sure your sections are properly parented to each other.
3. Don't use stock colours (the bright green default colour for example).
4. Don't overload on weapons. Use fewer, modded weapons if you want the firepower.
5. Don't use uberwank weapons (weapons with 99999999999 damage basically) unless you have a very good reason to.
6. Don't use too much repetition of sections. (see Anna's guide to good shipbuilding)
7. Don't overstretch sections or weapons, they look ugly when they get too big.

Re: OK...
I like it anyway, the flurry of Tachyon bolts made me laugh.Freiberg wrote:Well, that disqualifies the one actual ship I have built. Back to the drawing boards!

I'd like to add my own commentary on this, if no one minds:Water_and_Wind wrote:1. Don't overuse Aegis deflectors <-- first sign of a noob.

1. Yes. Very yes. Increase max health instead, or use the same number of regular deflectors-it's a tradeoff of limitless energy for adaptability.
2. Yes. That too.
3. Encouraged, but not required. Try other schemes apart from different shades of the same color, such as inverses upon the color wheel.
4. Weapon overload is bad for aesthetics. Plus, rolling your own is a sign of hard work.
5. One of the only very good reasons to? Joke craft.
6. Don't use completely random sections, either. Too chaotic, not good on eyes. Go for 3-5 different sections in smaller ships, 9-12 in a larger one. Approximately.
7. Indeed they do.
If dolphins are so smart, then how come they get caught in those fishing nets all the time?

If it's in different shades, it's not exactly stock green anymore, is it? ^^TheBlueEcho wrote:Actually Stock Green isn't bad. It's only bad when the WHOLE ship is covered in it.
Now if you take that stock green and combine it with other colors, then it looks better. Even different shades of stock green help out quite a bit.
