Kyle hums as he waits for the scan to complete. The AMT buzzes and the speakers crackle to life as the scan completes, bringing up his medical file.
"Personnel File for Subject K. Denholm. Log begins."
"Day XX5; Genetic modifications complete and settled. Subject implanted with control mesh systems and conductive systems. No rejection has occured so far."
"Day XX7; Initiated implantation of the biocells. Difficult to find suitable body cavity locations. Settled for placing them in the lower torso."
"Day XX8; Subject's body has integrated the biocells perfectly - better than originally anticipated. We didn't even have to connect the cells and the conductive systems - it was already done. Peculiar."
"Day X10; Subject growing visibly agitated and twitchy, as if slightly hyperactive. Possibly a side-effect of built up bioelectrical fields."
"Day X11; After preliminary testing of field control, lost several pieces of fragile lab electronics and some eyebrows, plus one moustache. Subject shows poor control, but considerable power output compared to previous experiments."
"Day X13; After some training, subject now exhibits a greater degree of control. Agitation and twitchiness decrease after field manipulation, fatigue common after prolonged projection."
"Full Report; Subject was part of the 'Electrogenics' research project, aiming to implant personnel with special bioelectricity storage cells (batteries, basically) and a control/conductive system allowing the built up energy to be discharged through the hands at will. Has a considerable number of uses, besides the obvious use of injuring enemy combatants.
""Electrogenics" refers to the generation of electrical fields by living beings. By integrating four clusters of a new specially designed organ as well as a mesh of conductive material into the body, the recipient is able to create, control and project electrical fields. Four organ clusters act as batteries and can absorb power from any electrical source, or from the body's nervous system and blood stream, processing sugars into stored energy. This also makes the recipient effectively immune to electrocution at least until their internal cells are at maximum storage."
Kyle peers at the AMT console and raises an eyebrow, then steps off the scanning pad. "Well ain't that just peachy. Who's up next?"
Meanwhile, Z'anh appears to be poking around a little way off in the laboratory. Anyone looking at him would get the odd feeling that he was being watched. He wanders off into a side passage, out of sight, and then there's a loud metallic crunch and a low, insectoid hissing sound. Z'anh can be heard talking, his voice muffled, apparently trying to talk to whatever it is.
Then there's an unpleasant squelch and a scream that quickly subsides. A few moments later, wet-sounding crunches and cracks, and then silence again.
"Why do I get the feeling we're not the only things these nutcases cooked up in here?" Kyle ponders out loud.
