Stuff I've done: Pg 9 Jormungand + Helot

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

In addition to the ships being stellar, this is without doubt the best and most creative back story and description on the forums. I wish I had seen your work before now.

If it wasn't for those ships I would have never thought of weapon placement or how to make missiles launch in other directions.

Your use of demeters for joints is creative, but I think the tips of the arms (especially the middle ones) and the general proportions of the arms make the ship look rather fragile and unwarlike. The last section of each arm looks to be straight out of a metal-bicep mecha flick, but the first joint on each arms seems unusually flimsy. Perhaps making each part of the arm closer in burliness and thickening the joints would reduce this appearance? Please note that the only reason I offer this criticism on an otherwise epic ship is that I feel the need to keep your ego in check :D. I recall the WCW7 ship was made of epic metal biceps.

[Edit:] Yup.

Following the success of our Reconquista-model, we are expanding our range of 1:3,500 scale Faladhi models to include the awesome Jormungand-class battle carrier! 12 points of articulation and still at our affordable prices. While this venerable design is due for replacement by the planned Hekatonchires-class (which we promise to make a model of as soon as it is finished), we still think that it's special enough to merit the attention of our series on Famous Ships of the War. Now we've replicated in our famous detail the Apophis, one of the most important vessels in the Imperial Fleet. While other vessels earned their fame in the fiery crucible of combat, the Apophis became legend for its tireless crews who labored night and day to maintain the Imperial flagship Shrike and the prince's escorts during the long war years. The Apophis was an Imperial ship, and thus runs the standard colors unlike the House-specialized Anansi model we still offer.

Features: Fans of the Anansi replica won't be disappointed by our attention. We've been up and down the corridors of this famous ship, and we're proud to report that we've got the best model available on the market.

Image

This model includes some of the finest details we've yet been able to produce, like one of the Apophis's maneuvering jets as well as this light gun cluster. There are 13 of these gun blisters on the Jormungand-class, concentrated mainly on the large central hull. You can see we've even included running lights and hazard indicators for the powerful fusion engines!

Image

We've not neglected the support aspects here. As per standard, we've included the midships centripetal ring, now in two parts for easy detachment and replacement. The advanced kit even comes with a motor that rotates it at the same speed as on the real warship! The centripetal ring, or grav-gym, rotates once every 25 seconds to provide 9.8 m/sec^2 centripetal acceleration, or the equivelant of one gravity. The outer edge moves at 39 m/sec when engaged, and the gym has a total area of 257,686.781 square meters or 2,773,717.43 square feet, which is good as over twenty thousand crewmembers are mandated to spend at least two hours each 24-hour period maintaining their fitness in spite of the ravages of zero gravity on the body. Also visible are the two fighter bays, necessary for the Jormungand in order to rapidly launch its massive four air wings (an unbelievable 960 fighters) as well as many service and construction vehicles in its role as planetary assault ship.

Image

Here we see the primary armament of the Jormungand, two of its ten total heavy laser emitters. The Jormungand is meant to serve as task force command vessel and all around battleship, and features an impressive ten heavy x-ray lasers, each with an 8 terawatt output, spread around the hull. The Jormungand's weapons are arranged so that the ship must turn its top towards a target to unleash all of its weapons; the vessel is more suited to a relief vessel or general purpose artillery craft, lending its considerable long-ranged firepower in any direction anywhere in the battle. Not shown in this image is the substantial array of rear-mounted assault lasers for discouraging close pursuit by more nimble enemy elements.

Image

The Apophis has two massive cargo bays with a volume of nearly a cubic kilometer, often used to store modular components and construction equipment. Two huge square doors are visible at either end of the secondary hull, and an advanced mining laser dome is visible at the middle. While this equipment could in theory be used to inflict damage to starships, the lasers were so low power and short range that they were never used, even for point defense. That role was taken by the array of ultraviolet assault lasers along the flanks of the Jormungand-class, which were quite lethal against sublight parasites and given time could inflict massive damage to destroyers and even battleships. Not visible in this schematic on the underside of the Jormungand-class are a dozen doors that open up to reveal a collapsible mobile shipyard capable of refitting a 12 million ton sublight parasite in a matter of days, or expanding to encompass a capital ship section in a matter of weeks. Additional onboard automated factories could produce all the munitions necessary for extended operations by battlegroups, although tungsten for hypervelocity penetrators was always in short supply and frequently merited lengthy mining excursions to planetary surfaces, made possible by the ten 12-man planetary landers. Finally, on the far left of the image one of the two heavy missile pods is visible. Designed when the most pitched battle was in the simulators, the Jormungand originally possessed no ship to ship guided armaments whatsoever. The Apophis was the pioneer of the war refit to include these weapons for the brutal, knife range fighting made possible by FTL drive advancements. Guided missiles generally did not possess the acceleration to matter in long-ranged conflicts, but inside ten thousand kilometers they were exceptionally deadly.

If you're interested in purchasing an amazing conversation piece or have interest in the famous units of the War, don't wait! This stunning reproduction of the Jormungand-class FCS-590 Apophis is available at the low price of 12,000 solars for a limited time only! Some assembly required. Not suitable for juveniles or those without prehensile digits.

Though I've said it before in other places, I'd like to make my admiration of these masterpieces known here as well. These are, simply put, the best ships out there, period. While the original fleet will always have it's place for actually playing battles, these are truely wonderful to look at, defying conventions on ship-building left and right. Keep it up, and fleets for BP4 is locked up, though I pity the fool that has to load them all at once.

Any guess on when the Helot will be available for download?
seriously Anna. seriously oh my gawd seriously.

I agree, these are definitely some of the best ships out there. They are creative, detailed, and your presentation of them is awesome. They look fragile and almost insectoid, but also bulky and tough. Well done.

Oops. Here's the Helot here.

Boy I can't believe I waited this long...

And
some
screenies

For those of you who have actually any interest in how I stat out my ships, and how they play, here's the relevant facts:

The Helot's quite capable in swarms, using its assault laser to blast weakened sections. The medium cannons have good coverage if they do turn to target slowly, and the missiles hurt a lot. In packs Helots can deal substantial damage in a single pass.

Anybody got any feedback about the new ships in play?
