UPDATED creation, need constructive input (still)

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

Krishach wrote:For thrusters: I tried that. You attach the thrusters to a lower piece, and then stack something on top them both, like the weapons, right? I can't seem to get that to work for me with the thrusters. No matter what the host piece for the thrusters Depth is, the thruster is always on top. Did I miss something? The ones I've done so far I've done setting Alpha to 0, so they are transparent.

The blaster pattern there is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I'll try to get that set up... I hope, anyway.

And for the beam: they're all to different sections, and your saying to have the "end result" layered beams parented to the same piece the visible one came from? I'm a little fuzzy on how to set up a trigger that keeps these from being just 2 separate weapons, rather than making it hit a specific source. You made EXACTLY what I was thinking (which would be the inner arms and head of the larger ship here) but I think I am a little fuzzy on how you did it. Not to be cliched, but I still have a lot to learn.

/*/*/**//*/* ok, having a problem::::::::::
my .sb4 file, including the 2 backup .sb4 file with a new name, are gone. The .shp files are still there, but the .sb4s are gone, so I can't open them. And it was JUST for the newest one I'm working on. WTF do I do besides start completely over?

Well, I don't have any idea as to what to do for your bug, but for hiding thrusters, or any module, you need to parent it to something lower than the section you want to hide it under, then hit 'W' on the module.

as for the beam parenting, I'll just upload the ship. ignore the link lines, I just set it up to salvo fire like the death star beam does.

I appreciate the upload. In sandbox, I can't get that ship to fire, though, so I haven't been able to recreate the blast you have, by either piloting yours or remaking something of my own similar. How did you get it to fire? Otherwise, it doesn't work for me.

And I redid the ship, and have the .sb4's backed up on another HD.

Oh I probably should have mentioned, you pretty much have to direct control this to fire, there's really no way you can get it to fire correctly otherwise. unless someone comes up with a way to use links or something. Might try to do that later. anyway, the beams I made are set to fire with the left mouse button in direct control mode. click, don't hold it down or it messes up the firing process. also, there seems to be a bug with linking that makes it not fire correctly until the master weapon runs through its ammo once, which should be one shot with these beams.

Weapons can be triggered to force fire, I'll go back and try if it works and maybe I can cough up a working prototype while building my turrets.

Would appreciate any help. Your turrets are awesome, btw. Most of the "3 prong" parts of the ship are going to do that little move, and either force fire an energy projectile, like plasma, or a beam weapon. No old fashioned gun ports on the Haelouaan series.

New updates:

____________Bateleur _______________________________ Hellion ________________________________ Raptor Heavy Fighter

___________________Haelouaan Series _______________________________________ Thruster Concept

Did some tweaking to the thruster system of both heavier ships, and also Refined the arms on the largest. Started and finished a Heavy Fighter, and I'm inordinately pleased with it. If I can get the weapons like I want, then these may even be worthy of the Ship Gallery.

THRUSTER CONCEPT This may not be new to anyone, but it bothered me that the ship would turn in place with 0 thruster support, like it was leaning the wrong way. I have no sideways thrusters on the monter sized battleship, and had no natural place to put them, so I decided that the new thruster units I made would be "leaked" by the pilot to pivot the ship.

It was a nice idea until I realized that SHIP TURNING RIGHT MEANT ENGINES "LEAKED" THE WRONG WAY. Turned, right, and the LEFT thruster would fire. Which would be GREAT if the thruster was on the OUTside of the ship. But since I was setting a centripetal pivot concept, it looked all wrong. And turning them, of course, helps not at all.

To solve the issue, I set the X Axis thrust on the ship to -0.50, and that solved the issue. As you can see above, the ship turns left, and the thrusters FIRE left on the back to spin the rump around, due to the negative X. This is perhaps not 100% correct space physics as it relates to the BSF Physics Engine, but it looks a hell of a lot better, and also looks REALLY nifty coming from the side of the thruster block

Is there any way to stop the Core for puffing smoke?

I'm signing off for the night, and have to go to work. My LOA for surgery is over, so I'm posting this, but I didn't have the time I'd have liked to give it more thought. I was playing with Kaelis's recent parts pack and the lighter fighter concept. Here's what popped out. I've included the other smaller ship for size comparison.

Still asking for constructive criticism for this entire series, and these two in particular. Also "it would be cool if" suggestions are great too, because there is stuff I thought of and don't know if its possible or how to do it, and always some I missed completely. Doodad or effect suggestions especially.

Crossing thrusters?

Now that's a piece of genius right there.

My only real problem with these is that some of the sections look fuzzier than others, while other parts are extremely sharp.

I agree; its been a challenge with resizes. I don't know if you know a solution to that: my only thought is to go over the pieces that are over-pixelelated and cover them with smaller detail parts while retaining the original shape. Only other option I know is to use a visual editor and manufacture a larger version of said part.

Hi Prim
Find other public parts HERE in Wyrdysm's Custom Content section

I was actually just providing that link on our own website for the section Prim. Kaelis made an assload of new parts, Arc made some nifty turrets, and a ton of other work you can use that isn't in the editor.

Ok, its late, and once again I am screwing around with parts and concepts with little idea where I'm headed, and on way too many (legal) drugs.

Concept: Anemone inspired design: tactical purpose - Ramming (question recently posed in the Q&A thread)
Concept: A thruster fire that looks like its coming from the middle of the tendrils

Asymmetric tendrils too, at least a little. I need to add more doodads, but atm this is what I've come up with for now. Please consider this a rough draft.

Well, i see what you're trying to do here, but its just godawful ugly. DO NOT stretch/shrink parts like that, its the worst thing you can do to a ship. Im not a fan of your choice of colors, either, but thats a matter of taste.
