I suggest that you keep in mind that one can always rely on the shipmaker if it comes to possibilities. Currently, we are largely limited only by our imagination. Try to oicture a ship as you would want it to appear in a massive sci-fi epos, and then try to put that look back into the ship. Or try to draw it, if you can handle a pencil a bit. You will see that you'll figure out things that you wouldn't have seen before. Right now your ships are a little stalled in development, I think. They're nice and simple, but I think you're capable of more.
Thanks for the tips Arcane, they've probably saved my fleet from the junk pile at the edge of the universe (Didn't you hear? The restaurant there went out of business, because it was too remote to get enough customers). However, I'm still not quite there yet. I've drawn up a couple sketches (don't have scanner access right now, so I can't upload them), re-imagined the Kal'thak in 3D, and then made it in BSF, but it's still not working for me.
A group shot of the three Kal'thak designs I've made since I began here:
Top: Second one made, after several revisions. Really not liking the weapons deck idea, as it just looks boring in the end.
Right: Third one made, worked on the engines, and realized that the weapons deck won't work at all, at least with my skill level.
Bottom left: The first Kal'thak, and my first ship ever. The fights actually look pretty good, and all the weapons are stock. This is probably where my silly weapons deck idea came from, which is why I included it.
Right now I am kinda looking for comments on the third version (right), more of where I'm going wrong with this. I'm definitely going to try to completely re-build my skillset, as I seem to be taking the wrong approach to building good ships.

After a little work, the fugly weapons deck has been decked out with superstructure, including a bridge, light weapons mounts, one heavy weapon mount (featuring a traded Scinfaxi weapon), and a much shinier shield dome.
Should I keep this and do the same to the other ships, or try something else completely?

Big improvement. Good to see you decided to break up the boring gun decks with some more sections. However, I preferred the engine style on the ship on the right in the WIP pic.
Also, good to see those Coilguns being put to good use.

The walls have eyes: the shadows we throw are the shadows we try to throw off.
How's this then?
EDIT: Played around with layering at the back:

I like this. Mostly the way you managed to pull off the small engines. And I'm a sucker for Electric blues. The covered deck is a great improvement. It even has a bridge now because of it.
Keep Going with this type of style. I'd like to see how the rest come out.
Side Note: For Some reason, your GetBox Image's are breaking, and I keep losing sight of them.
The Den and the Mir are now re-fitted with the new engines and superstructure!
I think the Den's engines may be too bulky, what do you guys think?
And as a side note, with the Third Era, the TGE will focus highly on shielding and ablatives over PD, with heavy shielding on the larger ships, and none on the smaller ones. Also, each ship has underlying support pieces, in the form of section 16's. They have modded HP (2x the core HP), and are there for added support to the ship, and they make the ships look better when they're half blown-up.

I've finally gotten enough done on the next ship that I'm now moderately pleased with it! Presenting, the Var:
Right now my only problem with it is the nose, it just doesn't want to work for me, and I've tried several different styles, and this one was the best of them. The main problem with the nose is that it narrows instead of broadens, which I feel goes against my general design of the TGE.
On the side, I may replace the rear double light weapon mounts with missile racks, to spice up my weapon ensemble.
