Wanna see something retarded?

Post by Kaelis »

This has been bugging me for some time. I even bothered th15 about it, but apparently hes too busy.

BUT! After two painful hours of making sure im not seeing things (im still not sure, though) i think ive figured it out.

Thus, with outrageously upscaled images (because i have issues), for your guilty viewing pleasure:

( WARNING: Sanity not guaranteed. Might contain pink elephants. )

1. Move the core away from its default position.
2. Create section09 and input these coordinates: x: 1100 y: 1020.
3. Make a screenshot:
Image
(added grid lines as an overlay, they actually meet at 1099, 1019)
4. Flip it along x axis, then flip it along y axis.
5. Rotate it 180 degrees.
6. Make a screenshot:

7. Compare.

So it gets shifted 1 pixel to the right and 1 pixel down, no biggie...

But wait, theres more!

It actually doesn't get shifted. Its the point around which rotation/scaling/flipping happens which is the culprit. This leads to some retarded behavior.

Before retardation:

Notice the red dot? Its that point around which the whole sprite gets rotated. Its also the point of section coordinates.

After retardation:

\o/

This also applies to scaling.

Everytime you flip a section, this point gets shifted. And a pink elephant dies. How many more have to die?

 Conspiracy theorey confirmation alert

I knew it... th15 is secretly using us to build a fleet of ships piloted by PINK ELEPHANTS, using shipmaker to sneak them in...

Seriously though, these off by half a pixel type issues could really use updating, especially with evidence like this to help th15.

This, kids, is proof as to why Kaelis, like many other nerds, will never get laid.

;)

P.S. you have a wrong image on the bottom row of examples.

TBH I doubt this'll help th15 fix the issue but you never know.

Thanks, fixxored.

I wonder if he knew about this... And fixing this might be impossible - may as well be an issue with GM.

I have also noticed this. I also HATE that section. Seriously, I would be very happy if it were replaced with a near-identical symmetrical piece so it could be used more effectively in symmetrical ships.

And here I was about to yell at Kaelis for posting his picture topic in the wrong forum.

Conversely, I love that section, and use it a lot.

It's not that it's a bad section, but often I'm looking for something to stick on the back of front of a symmetrical ship (especially in tournaments). That piece seems the obvious choice, but it throws off the mirroring because of the unevenly spaced prongs and the odd width of the section. I like the piece in theory, but in practice, it sucks. Maybe I'll make an image later tonight to more accurately describe the changes I think would be nice. Also, it looks like a face, and that bothers me.

Excellent work, Kaelis.

I too have noticed that flipping (and through mirroring) will shift the center point 1 pixel in a direction, perpendicular to the axis of the flip.

I recently developed a work-around to 'maintain' symmetry of pieces, but I'll double check the method to make sure it works. Will post tomorrow.

The gist of it is that, knowing a flip along the vertical axis shifts the point left/right, and horizontal being up/down, you account for the shift along the centerline of a ship by limiting yourself to only one of the flips and never both.
