I have to disagree. IMO, Starcraft 1 was much darker and more grungy/rusty compared to other games from its times. Yes, there were saturated, contrasting colors, but thats because the technology didnt allow anything better. Remember zergs clawing their way through terran marines, spilling blood all over?

OMG ZERG RUSH KEKEKE!!

... sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway, I think the Command & Conquer series is pretty good as well. That is, before EA fux0red it. Given, Tiberium Wars is not too bad, but I liked the previous ones better.

Plus, has anyone noticed the apparent lack of in-game soundtracks in C&C 3?

Oh most definitely.

You're missing the technical aspects. They're adding all sorts of new moves and skills that you couldn't emulate in the original Starcraft or Warcraft.

You're judging Starcraft II as if it is supposed to be an entirely new game. It's not. It's a sequel.

Anyways...
In terms of 2d space combat (which there really isn't a lot), I'd have to say the only game [that I've played, mind you] that could even possibly compete is ShadowArmada. Unfortunately it's dead. But still, it was really interesting and offered satiation for the tactician inside me.

Im talking about graphical style. The 'technical aspects' is just more of the same.

Um... nope. Just because its a sequel doesn't mean it can't be innovative. And if i judged it as separate game, i wouldnt say theyve lost original Starcraft style...

What I really liked about Starcraft 1 was that each race required a unique strategy. So if the second one forces me to use each race in a different way, then I'll be happy. Imagine if Starcraft 2 came out like AoE 2....

What I like about BSF is that I don't have to worry too much about economies, much like Ground Control. That, and it is one of the few freeware games that has an active fanbase

It has a soundtrack composed by Trevor Morris and Steve Jablonsky, apparently. I actually have it on my other hard drive that I still need to rig up.

Turn up your music volume. Also, custom maps could have screwed up settings and may not play music properly if the author forgot to set what type of Zone it was when making the map. (There are themes specific to the zone types, so failing to set them would kind-of cause problems.)

I'm just disappointed in the lack of a jukebox.

On the subject of soundtracks, does anyone have any favorite soundtracks from a video game? My personal favorites are the ones from God of War and Shadow of the Colossus.

Fraxy is like the schmup version of BSF. It's really fun. The game has a "random" freeplay mode which basically after killing a boss (or set of) it randomly spawns another one. Just download a bunch of ships, pop em in, and start up your game. Great way to have some quick fun.
