Let's face it, the main attraction of BSF is building your own ships. Share them! If you need help, check the Shipmaker Info & Help forum a little ways down.
Problem: I have downloaded the ships and updates, but am missing the name and middle turret sprites for the serenity and the hanger glow sprite for the indiffrence.
sorry about that, the downloads aren't the best organised. i knew about the missing doodad for the carrier, but i'm pretty sure that the missile turret for the serenity should be in the first update (it is at my end atleast)
i'm going to make one big download at the end when i've completed the fleet
I'm going to ruin the streak for you so you don't quadruple post.
I like your ships, they are VERY Terran military.
They all have a good "Flow" although a better word could be found in German, too Bad I don't know German. =(
I need to ask though, whats the point of the orange glowing side pods?
Especially when the engines use blue flares?
I see them as a form of engine, maybe for reversing or turning, but there doesn't seem to be much point for them other than to break up the Penis-brick a little.
However I can see little that can add to the style much at all, maybe a navigational light or two, but that might ruin the look also.
the glowy orange bits are bussard scoops. it's a concept that's been around for a while but i'll give you an abridged version:
a large magnetic field is used to attract hydrogen and helium ions over a large area of space. the compression of the huge amounts of ions attracted (although they're usually very sparse the huge area of the scoop compensates for this) causes fusion to occur between the ions. this is then used as fuel - either directly propelled out the back or indirectly used to drive the ship, allowing an almost infinite period of acceleration for the ship (although the magnetic field does produce drag and eventually prevents acceleration, but only at speeds around 1/5 to 1/3 of the speed of light)
pretty much these ships use it indirectly. the glowy orange is the ions starting to fuse (even before they get to the reactor) whereas the drive system uses the enrgy from this to split and propel the ions of heavier elements, making it more powerful (and explaining the difference in exhaust colours). the lancer class however has a direct input drive (the big one at the back) which has a huge orangey exhaust plume
i think they do need a bit more detail. i'm going to work on some of tthe sprites to break up the big flat areas a little, and i'll probably add some doodads for detail
ok i've updated the first post with a single download for everything as it was starting to get a bit messy. the sprite folder's also been changed and reorganised to make it neater
edit - sorry to those three people who've already downloaded it the missile sprite wasn't correctly replaced in the files, i've corrected it now though...
try the attached link at the top of the first post - that's the most recent one and contains everything you need, and as its on wyrdism it shouldn't fail. i should really get rid of the other downloads...
Well I can barely make heads or tails of your sprites as far as making a decent looking ship, but I'm running a battle now and I just had to say that your thruster system is brilliant. Looks great and so do the weapons. Also your capital ship is somewhat terrifying. I'd been having a nice 3vs1 battle against one of your serenity class and seemed to be winning despite stock weapon stats so I spawned your battleship and one volley took out each of my destroyers.
yeah, the sprites aren't exactly that user friendly, it was more a case of me designing a ship then making the sprites to build it in photoshop xD but i'm making a set of converted stock sprites in this style, but its taking a while seeign as i have to make atleast 4 versions of each one...
and yes, the battleship tends to do that, the firepower was originally going to be about half of what it is now, but i kind of kept adding more artillery and yeah... no matter how i've nerfed it (the armours about 30% of the original) it still does what it does best...
Ah good, I was going to ask permission to try converting a few stock pieces. Least its easy with the non sw ones. Might I suggest that you don't make a whole bunch of different versions with shading. Make the basic piece, then make doodads or something like Eri's grunge pack to add shading? Might not work, but I know trying to build with asymmetrically shaded sections wasn't fun. And good for you on the artillery, you designed the turrets beautifully and their placement is well thought out so it doesn't bother me in the least to have that many. It might look horrible, but have you tried adding an understructure of say, horsemonster sprites, so when a piece gets blown off you see the inner hull? Maybe it would look too weird...
