The closest thing you can get to a land map (without modifying the game) is a really large planet. I find red or brown, size 20ish tends to work best (on a default sized sanbox). It's far from perfect, but it looks somewhat like land.

When you download custom sections, what should you do with them? Should you put them into groups (import them permanently) or just import them one by one whenever you need them?

One solution is to create a sprite import ini for it, then import that when you need them. It depends on how many of them you actually need, though.

Is there documentation on doing this?

You know that you can arrange, save and load different sprite inis out of shipmaker, right? Thats what most sane people do.

I never used any documentation. It's pretty self-evident how stuff works. You have paths to each sprite in the group, and there's a counter for the number of sprites in the group. Just add as many as you like and update the count accordingly.

You know, I bet someone could make a program that could create sprite ini's from the contents of folders. If I had a working java or c environment, I could probably do it...

See, this is exactly why you should always read the documentation. If you had done that, you would have known that using group arrange + saving/loading sprite inis is far easier and more convenient that manually editing them, and that group arrange takes care of 'creating sprite inis from the contents of folders'.

I did actually check the New Features Documentation... Okay, that doesn't help me much.

Sorry.
