My fleet's pretty much done, I have the basic ships up and running. I'm ready to go.

It is up to each player if he/she wants to post pictures of the fleet. Please send a copy of your ships to the mod to test its balance.

And a tentative start date would be around: May 1

I have a question (sorry if it has been asked/answered already), is weapon modding allowed? If so, to what extent? I ask this because I was planning to build a fleet that uses heavy weapon modding.

Due to our balancing systems, I think it would be okay.

Yup. I used the balance system I did specifically so modded weapons would be okay. There was a lot of complaining about modded weapons, as I recall, with some people flatly refusing to participate unless they were allowed.

As this is the beta, I figured it'd be best to allow it at first, and try to balance things in a very simple, open-ended way. If it gets abused too much, or there are complaints, I might switch over to a point system. No better way to see if things work than trying them out.

Tsakara - Sure. I'll allow one or two late entries.

Here a raw values for starbases:
Defense Platform - <2 Zeluspower - 0.2 point
Small Space Station - <2 Hestiapower - 1 point
Space Station - <1 Cronuspower - 2 points
Starbase - 1 Nagaya2power - 4 points (one max per system)
Starfort - <3 Nagaya2power - 8 points (1 per every 15 systems)

I used Nagaya2s because Nagaya3 have a powerful front shield and require flanking to kill, and unless the opponent is on broadside, there is no way for a space station to flank

Well, the main scoring system uses Cronuses now (I think that that might not be a good idea because Cronuses only have beamers, but ok), so this system should be calibrated similarly. Also, stations need to be more powerful than their movable counterparts or no one will build any, so the bigger stations need to be more powerful. Also, since Defence Platforms only cost 0.2 (which is a good thing, they should be spammable), they really do have to be beatable by a Zelus.

Defence Platform - <1 Zeluspower - 0.2 point
Small Space Station - <2 Hestiapower - 1 point
Space Station - <2 Cronuspower - 2 points
Starbase - <5 Cronuspower - 4 points (one max per system)
Starfort - <10 Cronuspower - 8 points (one max per 15 systems)

Any objections to this? Remember, by the time you can get a Starbase, you'll have 300 points to throw around, so it's not as if stations are going to get out of hand...

Also, any word on an upper limit on Flagship power? I don't mind if you say people can make them as big as they want, though I'd prefer a limit, but you should let us know.

2 Defense Platform - <1 Zelus power - 0.5 point
Small Space Station - <2 Hestia power - 1 point
Space Station - <1 Cronus power - 2 points
Starbase - <5 Cronus power - 5 points (one max per system)
Starfort - <10 Cronus power - 10 points (one max per 15 systems)

Modded it slightly, in the platforms and in the Starfort. Change the cost for both and for a Defense Platform, 2 that are spaced a Hestia length apart should be beatable by 1 Zelus.

Oh, and on the max ship size I would say around 25 Cronus power

Ok question, do we start with a full 20 point fleet or have to build up slowly.

Sorry, but this is sorta silly:

Code: Select all

Fighter - 1 Zeluspower - 0.5 points
2 Defense Platform - <1 Zeluspower - 0.5 points

Destroyer - 1 Cronuspower - 2 points
Space Station - <1 Cronuspower - 2 points
These need to be better than their counterparts or no one will use them. I still think this works better:

Code: Select all

Fighter - 1 Zeluspower - 0.5 points
Defense Platform - <1 Zeluspower - 0.2/0.25 points
(or 2 Defense Platform - <2 Zeluspower - 0.5 points if you seriously want to balance it that way, but I can see headaches from this)

Destroyer - 1 Cronuspower - 2 points
Space Station - <2 Cronuspower - 2 points
You give up the ability to move around the map (force projection) in exchange for stronger defence in a single sector. It's basic strategy that defences are more powerful per point. (Ok, Strat 101 time: Take two 10 system empires. If one decides to turtle and has 15 points of stations in each sector, and the other only spends 5 points on stations per sector, the turtler will only have a 100 point fleet, while the aggressive one will have a 300 point fleet. Guess who wins. HINT: even if stations are twice as powerful as ships per point, which isn't what I'm suggesting, the battles look like 130 points vs 300 points)
