Ship designs C&C

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

Thanks guys. Some people need to, quote an old classmate, get glasses! :P

Bien, the SW ship with the spindly walkway would be a Nebulon-B Frigate. Someone on the boards might be interested in making one. Next project? (That's gonna take forever) :D

Anyway, the ship in its (not-so) final form. Think of it as the final draft before review.

Full weapons load-out commences in the near future. Right now, it's got 8 modded mini missiles for range and damage. Two Autocannon turrets with some kick and range. Beefed-up beamers in pod tips

That's a pretty nice ship. Familiar colors, heh. The cyan sections seem a bit spurious, but not too bad. My main complaint would be that the white areas near the midsection seem more detailed than they should be. Overall though, I think I like it.
seriously Anna. seriously oh my gawd seriously.

*Looks at colors, then looks at own fleet*

Damn, I just realized how common light blues are for ships.

Anyway, very nicely done. I like how you thickened the ship without making it seem tacked on.

I would be inclined to bulk up the bow more, but then again I think that's just the BSG fan in me, heh. If it's a broadsider then I guess it doesn't matter, though you should bear in mind that the AI's not great, and half the time your ship will be eating rounds to its bow. Just a practicality comment. Plus it looks a little unbalanced with such a bulky rear and wide middle.

Agree that the cyan is a bit random - team colour perhaps?

Presenting: The Arbalest-class Missile Cruiser

Post by Jimmy_the_Llama »

Okay, now it's loaded up and ready to blow stuff up.

Code: Select all

Name: Arbalest
HP: 600
Speed: 1.75
Turning: 0.40
AI Range: 3500
Accel: 0.05
Description:
Number of sections: 171
Total HP: 86533.39
Number of weapons: 41
Number of modules: 18
12 Mini-Missile packs
8 Particle guns
10 Pointrockets
2 Dual Autocannons
1 Repeating Artillery
2 Torp launchers
2 Souped-up Shock Beamers

I can't fix the really wide beam effects.

I'm contemplating retracting pods, but that'll serve no purpose aside from maybe aesthetics and a BSG-ish jump sequence.

Any further improvements? Help on the superwide shock beamers would be great.

shockbeamers are waaaay to fat and ugly. Keep their beam width to default.

Beam width should be default; would width be a function of damage multiplication and/or damage itself?

Missile storm I liek. =D

I think the width increases as a result of the damage multiplication.

You could also try layering a shockbeamer with a smaller beam on top of the other. It makes for some interesting effects - even so if you decide to throw in a tesla layer.

Shockbeam width is damage dependant, yes. So if you crank up the damage the beam gets a lot wider.

Thanks Arcalane; the problem's fixed, I just swapped em out for normal beamers in the same color.

Next project will be a ship of smaller class, a point defense frigate of sorts that's packed with missiles. I like missiles, you can probably tell. Design's probably going to be something like the flightpods glued together with recesses for missile banks.

Alright, the draft for the anti-missile frigate is done. Right now it's basically cannibalized flight pods and a scaled down reactor. Less weapons in character - lower power output and storage space - and for balance reasons.

Whoo! That took forever, with school research paper and that stuff.

Well, in the course of shipmaker-ing the missile defense boat, it got upsized.
Presenting the Scutum-Class Fleet Defense Frigate.

It packs a load of point-rockets, and the ultimate green-y's weapon: point beams!
Powered by an older antimatter drive for in-system use and festooned with point defenses, ships of the Scutum-class are designed to protect important capital assets and convoys in contested territories; it can conduct field repairs in the absence of shipyard nano-matricies.

It needs beef, the detailed sections make it look like a bunch of bones together.

The ships themselves are actually a mix of generic shapes, but I like it.

less detailed sections, more beef.

It looks MUCH better without the cyan frontal pieces. With the "tallest" portion on the ship being the lightest color highlight, it preserves a relative effect of 3d. It is very busy, but that's not always a bad thing. Much improved imo.

One question: 'beef' = what?
Considering that, what exactly is a good technique for dealing with too much detail, say for newer ships?
