Retractible Armor

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

Wrong. That is all.
Double-wrong. That ship never originally employed triggers and just moved/rotated normally. ;)

Neat use of movement. It'd be nice, though, if the ships weren't in that old favorite inducer of ocular pain, BSF Black. Black lines on blacker sections over a black background, it just isn't pretty.
seriously Anna. seriously oh my gawd seriously.

Remember the Batmobile in the first Batman movie?

You got me thinking about that.

It must be a bitch to coordinate and synchronize so many moving sections, so kudos to you for being a pioneer.

I am imagining a small square, it floats toward the enemy flotilla and they all go "aww cute" But then being the Allspark wannabe that it is it unfolds into a behemoth.

Hehe, just make a transformer anyway! Or a tadpole that transforms into a megafrog that just eats other ships like a fly.

Maybe armour that's driven by a turret, so it's always facing an enemy. Or a shield generator or something, so the generator turns and the shield (which is just another section, aegised, floating in space) targets the enemy. But multiple enemies can't be tracked. Kinda like in I-war, where the 2 shield generators (bottom/top) could each track one enemy, but not more.

:o

A small shield generator driven by a flak turret or other PD. It would seek out incoming bullets, intercepting them!

Not to mention that this guy hasnt had the new one to play with since, what, October? Or been playing the game that long?

So I agree about the batman thing but perhaps more appropriate, the modified voyager from the last episode where it gets beefy foldout armor. Not sure if anyone watched that far though

That, or it will be great for hanger bays, or for infiltrator ships that look like freighters with cargo containers till they open up. Which, looking at the new ship, might be appropriate. Cover up the side gun racks with multiple 'containers, as well as across the top. Maybe change up the front to make it look less aggressive. Just an idea.

Hmm. It doesn't seem quite that dark on either of my computers, even on my eight year old crap LCD, but if it makes you feel better most of my newer ships are a lighter grey. I just can't imagine any military painting warships flying around against a black background anything that would make them stand out any more than they have to. If I ever get around to making an opposing force for my fleet they'll maybe get some more colorful designs.

One of my first thoughts was to make this into a ship cruncher with a short range invisible weapon blowing off parts as the sections close.

It was. Particularly since I spent about an hour fiddling with the timing so it retracted the way I wanted it to. Bigger ships are going to be a pain in the ass.

That's not a bad idea. Once the armor slides back it could have slide out sections filled with weapons. I wanted something fairly balanced, so I limited it's weapons a fair bit, but taking more time to deploy a full sized ship could work. I'd like to see someone who makes those organic looking horrors use this, egg breaks open and suddenly a tentacled monster ship is growing out of a tiny pod.

Nice concept; I can see two things happening.

1. Someone goes and make a Pac-Man ship that shoots '1337' yellow dots of death.
2. Someone makes the Death Star v2.0 with retractable lasers using your design.

Just a prediction.

True. Even my attempts at messing with moving sections have mostly been how far can I push the system? And making neat looking things, rather than making them functional. I guess I'm building the core techniques that can be later applied to functional design.

Still have a few tests to run, but I'm proud to say that I've got sections that rotate around the X-axis (Rotation: Enabled is the Z-axis). It's only an optical illusion and falls apart when sections are destroyed, but...

'To the op:

I've been trying to do this.
How do you actually use trigger to initiate the opening sequence and initiate the closing sequence? What's the difference between trigger on and trigger off?
