Darkship's assorted stuff (now with a new ship)

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

i suppose i can agree with the deflector placement, what i was thinking when i did that was a shield projector cluster, but in hindsight that was not quite as good.

Its on my list of changes along with my weapon pixel nudging.

These ships are definitely nice. Especially the last three ones. They remind me a bit of the Ruustirii fleet though...Still, kewlness across the board.

These new ones kick ass.
I really like your partial covering of the core, but also using it as part of the design.

AH HA i finally have something so totally random that it does not fit into the other ships i have built so far for a fleet.

Well this one might evolve into a fleet itself if i feel like making it so.

In any case i present the Falcon. (Really i have no idea why i chose that name)

comments and criticism most welcomed.

Very well done on the use of repetition to make the shapes.
And it's called the Falcon because it has wings?
It looks very alien and advanced, I wonder how it would look with gradients enabled considering it has manually placed gradients.

Hmmm yes perhaps it is because of the wings, but really i only added the wings so it wouldnt look like a penisbrick.

As for gradients it didnt change much, if anything the colors got darker.

Love the outlining on the back, use of manual gradients is still kicking rad.

Manual gradients. Yum. :P

Watch out for the section stretching though.

And still manages to look better than almost anything you've ever made.

The stretching and repetition is fine, in this instance. It's a single row of the same section on either side, which doesn't qualify as excessive repetition. Additionally, the stretching was done intentionally to preserve a specific pattern, and does quite a good job of it. What the hell is wrong with some of you people? The only reason you even have a clue about what looks good on a ship is because someone else has told you, and even then, you don't understand WHY it looks good.

"Because it's big, it must be good!" "Because it has repetition and section stretching, it must be bad!"

The section stretching on this only just borders on being excessive. On the flipside, the manual gradient is fucking beautiful, so I suspect half a dozen talentless hacks to try their hands at it in the near future, only to butcher it horribly.

It's hard to even find anything wrong with this ship, but I did notice that, on that latest ship you posted, the frontal... errr, reactor (?) has some overlap at the back. Now, you probably did that one on purpose to make it look like some sort of 8, but I just thought I'd mention seeing how it slightly looks odd with the otherwise symmetrical ship.

Still, even if it is an error, it has to be the most beautiful error I ever saw. Great job on doing things that most people use to make suckships whereas you create beautiful things. Good job.

I disagree, the front stretched section 3's just have a very blurred and different texture then the middle part of the ship with the section 9's which is way more detailed, I don't care how much it was the intention to keep a certain patern, but the front just doesn't look as good as the rest of the ship

the last two ships should be held up as shining examples of how you don't need hundreds of sections to make great ships. Sure, you can reflexively slam them for repetition, that's easy enough, but the reason repetition or section stretching are bad is they tire the eye, and become very visually boring. Such is not the case here, where the curves and gradients are masterfully done.

They're not perfect. The internal curves are messy and uneven, disapointingly, but they are improving. It's an easy to overlook fault in light of the magesty of the rest of the ship. I look forward to seeing any further refinements of this idea.
