Go with a human arm, metal arms are fun and all, but it could be quite akward and attention drawing at first, something I doubt you will need.

Aegis makes for an ugly ship. The ship is also very plain and uninteresting, add some more sections, spruce it up, expand a little. And finally welcome to the forums and atleast you seem to know what the bleeding hell parenting is for.
