I would say, from smallest to largest:
Fighter
Corvette
Patrol Craft
Frigate
Destroyer
Cruiser (with L/H classifications, I guess)
Battlecruiser (this may be redundant if you choose to use "Light Cruiser" and "Heavy Cruiser")
Battleship
Dreadnought
Capital Ship
I put gunboats in the corvette-patrol craft category, since thye're usually smaller/faster.

Anyhow, for a traditional system of ship designations, which I'm going to fix the Aralonian style to soon:
Corvette
Very, very light ship - think armed hydrofoil with a few offensive weapons on it.
-Patrol Boat
A bit bigger than a corvette but smaller than a frigate - think Coast Guard cutter, designed for long missions but comparatively lowly armed.
Frigate/Escort Destroyer
Escort vessel with primarily defensive armaments, a bit smaller than a destroyer.
Destroyer
Escort vessel with multi-mission armaments designed to be able to project power alone if required.
Cruiser
-Light Cruiser
Capital ship, designed with higher rate-of-fire weaponry in a form factor between destroyers and battleships for ease of production. More stationkeeping ability than a destroyer.
-Heavy Cruiser
Capital ship, designed with longer-range weaponry in a form factor between destroyers and battleships for ease of production. Used whenever you need bombardment but can't afford a battlecruiser.
-Escort Cruiser
Capital ship, designed with close-range defensive armaments in a form factor between destroyers and battleships for ease of production.
-Aviation Cruiser
What, you were wondering where the designation 'CV' came from for aircraft carriers? It's Cruiser, Volplane, which is the French term for an aircraft. Basically, it's a cruiser hull with much room for smaller craft.
-Missile Cruiser
Almost its own designation. Packs missiles with a good punch and great range, generally mixed together with heavy cruisers, but I'd like to note major differences. (In combat, albeit packing a similar punch with cannons, missiles are almost always more accurate due to the ability to guide themselves into a moving target, and have much longer 'accurate range' (circle-of-error probability) due to self-guidance/propulsion)
Battleship
Heavy capital ship with the biggest guns and the thickest armour. Primarily designed to destroy any ships smaller than it with single blows, and to soak up firepower from basically everywhere else.
-Battlecruiser
Built on the Battleship-sized hull, it sacrifices speed for armour - 'outgun what it can't outrun, and outrun what it can't outgun' is the phrase commonly used by Jackie Fisher, progenitor of the battlecruiser-class. Very handy scout ships when required.
-Battlecarrier
Catch-all designation for any ship that carries both heavy guns of some sort and room for aircraft. Usually built on a battleship hull to allow effectiveness of both types of weapon.

I generally prefer this (smallest to largest)...
Auxillary craft (such as Trek shuttles) and fighters
Heavy auxillary craft (such as Trek runabouts)
Escort
Frigate
Destroyer
Cruiser (light and heavy) (inc. light carriers)
Battlecruiser (inc. medium carriers)
Dreadnought (inc. heavy carriers)
Battleship (inc. super carriers)
In a seperate class are freighters, including auxillary carriers, some mine layers, etc.

Teeeeeeechnically, a battleship-class vessel is smaller than a dreadnought-class vessel. Ref: HMS Lord Nelson (1906) vs HMS Dreadnought (1906).

If anything, I'd put it as larger than a battleship by twice the mass/displacement. (Which makes it synonymous with 'monitor' or 'dreadnought'. Perhaps 4x mass/displacement then?)

Heh, I guess I'm used to the Starfleet Command games, in which a "dreadnought" is smaller than a "battleship"Teeeeeeechnically, a battleship-class vessel is smaller than a dreadnought-class vessel. Ref: HMS Lord Nelson (1906) vs HMS Dreadnought (1906).

The Star Trek universe also describes the Enterprise as a battlecruiser and heavy cruiser within the same series. I think that goes to show exactly how much it fails at designations.
