The Alternative Fleet Project
As the Battleships Forever community steadily grows, so too does the size of the ships it tends to produce. While this increase may not be as exaggerated as some around here might try to insinuate, it is certainly existent and prevalent. The Beta Shipmaker even needed an increase in the size of the ships it could produce to compensate for this steady increase. As these ships become larger, their weapons and engagement ranges become mightier and wider, respectively, it is all too easy to lose the basic worth of the game behind the massive laser barrages and impervious hulls, as entertaining as they may be.
The Alternative Fleet Project is an attempt to counter-act this upward curve. While enormous, powerful ships are certainly fun to play as, it can be just as fun to break out the stock ships and play the game like that; move Peithos around strategically, flank unsuspecting dreadnoughts with Enyos, and generally enjoy the low scale of the combat, without your FPS dropping to the single digits and the screen filling with plasma, lasers, or whatever other manner of ship-to-ship doom that you can conceive.
Of course, the greatest of creations can wither under the weight of time, and some people may have grown tired of the stock ships as they stand now. This isn't an attempt to challenge the merit of these ships; they're all still fun to play with. It's only an attempt to offer an alternative, aside from really big, really scary monstrous ships.
I personally don't much care for arbitrary number values or balancing systems. The AFP will have none of that. We're only trying to make a fleet with more or less the same level of power as the current fleet, while offering interesting ship design or ideas. Your ship designs shouldn't be able to cut an Athena in twain in half a second. If your ship can destroy 3 of the stock Battleships alone without suffering much damage, we'd rather not have it. While I encourage a minimal amount of weapon modding, if you can create an interesting effect, you'll probably get a bit of leeway.
My aim is to create a fleet at least as large as the current stock fleet, and perhaps larger still than that. As it stands, if you do not include space stations or unique ships and assuming that I am counting right, the number of ships the stock fleet possesses is 19.

I'd prefer that we get some sort of organization before we start pitching ships into the mix.
W&W, your ships are good, and they can work as an alternate fleet well enough, but just putting those up and being done with it isn't the spirit of what I'm trying to do. Rather than having one person put together a bunch of ships, I'm trying to create a collaboration of ships, a sort of representation of what the community can do when we aren't bickering back and forth about who's ships are stronger or prettier or whatever.

I figure we could go one of two, or even both, ways. Either people can just come in and submit a ship, or we could get people to say which kind ship they would like to make, and we could figure it out from there. I'd prefer the latter method, as it would help us not end up with 19 Battleships.

Alright. Lets get to assigning people ships then. Maybe 2 or 3 a ship.Cerebrus wrote:I figure we could go one of two, or even both, ways. It's not a remake, necessarily. It's an alternative fleet. We may have ships that fill some of the same roles as some of the stock ships do, but it's not supposed to just be a redesign.
This is the ship I was making when I came up with the Alternative Fleet idea.

The [insert future name here]-class Destroyer is designed for the bombardment of large, slow, or motionless targets. While heavily armed for it's class, it has abysmally slow turning, acceleration and speed, ands ends up being little more than a flanking target for ships even as large as ordinary battleships.

This would act as a railcannon variant of the Cronus, then? Interesting... I may have to participate if that's allowed.
