ctrl-left click saves the day!!!
It'll cycle through all the sections at the place you clicked, one by one.

Nope. Still can't select the bugger.

Weird it should work.

1) Place the cursor on top of the piece you want to select.
2) Press down the Ctrl button.
3) Left click.
4) It should select the Gray piece. You can let go of the Ctrl button.
5) If it doesn't work and it selects a different piece, do (2) and down again.

Just making this orderly to make sure it is done correctly.

Ctrl+left click works, except when trying to parent stuff to the selected peice (which doesn't work for me).

I think it was Spoot who came up with a workaround for it. First left-click on the section without using ctrl, then ctrl-click on the same spot until the section is selected. For whatever reason, it works.
But if you're trying to parent to something hidden from the mouse, then you'll just have to use the good ol' shift-em-outta-the-way-and-back-once-you're-done trick.
