The Failed Project [open RP]

Post by Anarki »

Radiation. Lots of it. Not harmful to most organic creatures; but very long durations, such as a few months, could cause permanent damage and induce death and mutations.

That's what was on this strange uninhabited wasteland of a planet; a giant cold rock.

That's what surrounded the planet.

That's what inhabited the space around this planet.

Very, very far. How exotic... how... unusual.

The cold rock; the planet, had one large structure on it - black and white, with a strange symbol etched in the center of the massive metal monolith - the outline of a white circle, with two white parallel lines piercing through it.

Very large - visible from orbit. And having one obvious entrance - a large gate to the subterranean fortress.

But the source of so much radiation... a very powerful source... might be worth investigating...

Of course, there was the fortress' missile system which had to be dealt with... it doesn't like visitors... but these missiles were meant to disable, not destroy... disable what, is the question...

[OOC: For those who are feeling adventurous, don't just "land" on the planet; try to land on the planet, and depending on your landing destination will depend on the response. The radiation expands very far - and is very detectable by sensors. This unique alien radiation disrupts any kind of warp systems. You might find something interesting inside the building, though.]

Does the planet have an atmosphere?

D'oh.

Nope. Although the structure appears to have created some kind of artificial atmosphere around itself, using gravity-modification devices to keep the mostly-oxygen environment near it.

But the place is damn cold, although not instant-death cold.

The gravity is around 1.2x of Earth's gravity.

After several days of travel the CFSN Savior of The Broken finally arrived at the planet that was generating massive amounts of radiation that was interfering with long range sensors in the sector.

Five days ago, fearing the worst when he assigned the mission to explore the planet and find out what was generating the radiation, Commodore John Benjamin Granger selected a Europa Class Cruiser "Savior of The Broken" as the flagship for the expedition, along with a Miranda Class Heavy Destroyer, the "Light in Darkness", two Triton Class Destroyers, the "What was Once Lost" and the "Heavy Price Paid", and five Roswell Class Super Light Frigates, the "Rommel", the "Patton", the "Khan" the "Alexander", the "Dewey", and the "MacArthur".

Unfortunately there were no enemies waiting for them. So in dismay they launched five atmospheric flight capable craft and waited, suddenly after two of the space planes landed near the object that was on the surface, the silence in the ships were broken by a loud report coming from Febuary-530 "We have a problem! There are missiles heading towards us, we tried every countermeasure, but they will not break lock! We've been hit, I don't know how much punishment this bird will take! Eject! Eject! Eject!". Then five missiles streaked into view narrowly missing the Khan, hitting the Rommel instead, she was engulfed in flames, when they died down, there was not much left of the Rommel.

Auriak fleet Wanderer 443 heads towards the dark side of the planet, choosing a landing site completely opposite the monolith. A small task force sets up a base consisting of an Assembly Matrix, a small HQ, temporary residence, and a Vehicle Bay. Hoverships are used to carry personnel halfway to the monolith, and now they are continuing on by Hover APC. The warriors carry personal energy shields and there is a larger version on one of the APCs.

Captian Yyyrsek stood at the bridge of the Scion-class battleship Infinitus, which had been limping its way along the outer rim of the galaxy since it pulled out from a losing skirmish against Terran forces.
"Captain, the drive system should be repaired" A technician gurgled.
"Alright take us home."
...
The Infinitus dropped out of FTL prematurely over the planet. The newly repaired warp system knocked out by the strange radiation.
The ship hurtled towards the surface of the cold rock, inertial dampeners doing little to slow its descent.
A volley of missile showered from the monolith as the ship neared it, knocking out all power.
The flaming wreck of the ship hit ground, throwing everyone on board around, while sliding along the rough planet surface, losing hull plating, and coming to a stop a ways away from the monolith.

Yyyrsek gathered the survivors in the ventral hangar of the wrecked ship.
"I have no idea what this place is, but that monolith looks like a good place to start. Scans show high radiation levels and its cold out there. Be careful."

The wounded soldier of metal watched, as the blue mechanical guardians of the fortress, known as the Core, assembled themselves from small modular pieces, forming skeletons of steel, armed with a light plasma autocannon, powered by a source inside the monolith. The soldier had been there for a few weeks; he failed his duty, and he was the only survivor. However, why the Core Elementals - that's what his people referred to the skeletal soldiers which were the basis of the Core army - had not destroyed him; they simply ignored him as if he did not exist. The large steel pillar which had fallen on him simply immobilized him; but only inflicted superficial damage to his metal exterior; so he had been watching the Core reassemble themselves at the gate of the massive laboratory, to scout the planet. Twenty, maybe thirty of these mindless infantry would assemble at the gates, then leave to patrol the planet.

The small squad of blue metal began to march towards the dark side of the planet...

Five more missiles streaked into view, this time aimed at the Savior of The Broken, her point defense shot at the missiles, three were disabled, one got hit in the targeting array, the last missile hit her in the stern, fortunately her armor held, and she was only scratched.

Inside the Savior of The Broken's bridge, the MapOps Officer discovered the location of the launch sites, there were 5 arranged around the monolith in a manner that if you drew a line connecting each missile site, it would form a star, infrared scans also showed a star, but this time the tips touching the inside of a circle, a pentagram. MapOps exclaimed "Sir!" Her voice filled with terror "The launch sites have been discovered", Commodore Granger ordered "WepsCom, target each of the launch sites for orbital bombardment! CommOps, relay what I just said to every ship in this Battlegroup!".

The Light in Darkness entered the dark side of the planet which the Commonwealth had named Krieg-8C, then her sensors detected a fleet, her CommOps Officer sent a message to the Savior of The Broken, it read "Sir! We detect a fleet, they seem to have detected us, but they are not firing! Establishing communications!"

If I taught English class, I'd use that as an exapmle for a run-on sentence.

The central processing unit hummed, as it received information from the receivers, which was sent from the transmitters, which received the information from the sensors.

The strange domes located all over the structure began to hum... and the incoming weapons fire began to slow down, to a halt...

Then a drone for every dome came out as the structures were still humming, intent on collecting the neutralized projectiles...

That is what the central processing unit envisioned. And it was going to enforce it with the tools at hand.

The central processing unit hummed, as it sent information to the transmitters, which sent information to the receivers, which sent information to the Core Anti-Projectile Gravity Shield.

The Auriak task force engages in combat with a squad of Core Elementals. Three warriors are killed, and one APC gets its drive unit critically damaged. The Elementals are destroyed and the force moves on.

Yyyrsek motioned for his group to stop and take cover behind a few large rocks before the open expanse that lay between them and the entrance to the monolith.
The trek from the wreck was relatively uneventful, interrupted only by the sound of something marching in the distance.
A few stray bolts rained upon the landscape from above, and Yyyrsek watched as missiles streaked from the monolith into space, where he could faintly make out a fleet of ships returning fire.

Suddenly, drones emerged from domes on the monolithic structure, emitting a strange humming. The projectiles falling from the ships above seemed to slow to a stop.
Yyyrsek motioned for his group to remain silent and maintain position.

Commodore Granger ordered "WepsCom! Commence Orbital Bombardment on those launch sites! CommOps! Tell Fleet to knock out those sites! Now!
