How uber-wanky is your wankship?
People around here have their wankships..Well, most of them anyway.. the beheemoths with more parts and overpowered guns than all the stock BF ships put together.
So how wanky is your ship? We'll use the Leviathan as a test base - pit your ship, AI-controlled against it and see how long the Levi lives.
Now I'm willing to bet that most answers will be no1 (I've sen a few ships).
So I have to ask myself - what gives?
what's with the redicolously overpowered ships? Where's the fun with maxed 9999999 damage beams and 99999999 hull ships? Ego stroke? overconpensating something? don't day design, since no design requires uber bemd of ultimate death.
Myself? As a general rule I don't use beefed up weapons - they usually have stock values. In a few rare ocasion I actually did cange the values there is another simple rule I follow, the "2-5-10 rule".
Basicly it's the damage increase I'm willing to make on a weapon, depending on the number of weapons. the more weapons I have of one type, the less I'm willing to increase the damage from the stock value. If I only have one weapon which is the ships main weapon, then I increase it's damage by a maximum factor of 10. no more. Never.
I like to have at least SOME semblance of balance.
Now that that's said, Off I go to make the "Fist of God" defense satellite with everything maxxed out as much as the editor will allow.....since, I have to have something to defend myself with against all those wankships.

Depends on the model. The Myrmidon and Titan, for all their overwhelming firepower, still can't kill the Levi in under a minute/thirty seconds because their captains are pennypinchers. I'm not kidding. I've seen the Myrmidon refuse to fire it's plasma torpedo batteries and doomsday missile batteries at the Leviathan despite repeated attack orders and the Levi being well within range. I haven't tested the Titan against it much that I can recall, but the Titan is somewhat more powerful than the Myrmidon to a certain degree.
My others can easily toast it in under two minutes (Exec, Sov, Vis, etc.) and maybe less. I haven't tested them against it in a long time though.

My Archy can defeat the Levi in 2-3 minutes if I'm in control.
Under AI control it can't kill a levi at all, since it has no weapon overpowered enough to break trough a aegis shield, and the AI isn't smat enough to just chage in.
All of my other ships either can't kill it in a 1-on-1 even under my control or can just barely.

There is design into it. Because when you mod certain weapons and their properties. They can totally turn into different weapons altogether.
And when somthing has a purpose, it has design. And I know that MY OWN uber beams of death have a purpose. That being keeping me on equial ground with everyone else. Also it's just innocent fun watching my Velvet Hammer cook through 4000HP of unsheilded armor every once and awhile.

The velvet Hammer generaly cooks through a Levi in under 10 seconds if I apply proper fire contoll.
Longer if I just let it sit there and fire on it's own.

And I say double BS. If your only goal is to match or overpower other peoples ship, just make a single section ship with a maxed out beam. You can kill anything with that (providing it fires first).
If you just want for asthetic or tactical purposes a slightly different weapon (loner fire time, longer range, greater rate of fire), that's perfectly OK unless you ramp up the damage to redicolous levels.
for instance, I'l like a ral gattling weapon..that would require 50-100 shots a second, but i sure as hell won't put 9000 damage per shot there.
Unless of course, the only true purpose of your ship is to out-pimp someone elses.

There's more to evening out the competition than just making a wanklaz0r. Anyone can do that.
