I also found X2 annoying because it was non linear and expected you to start doing a lot of missions and founding your own company within the first few missions whilst harassing you to get on with the main story.

Also, the combat system was terrible and it'd have done a lot better with Freelancer/DS1-style mouse control.

I also note that DS1 did have exploration incentives. Admittedly the artifacts are highlighted and listed, but they do at least give you an excuse to go back and liberate systems, or to break away from the storyline to keep upgrading the DS1 which is pretty much vital. The number of times I was forced to warp out of an artifact system without getting the artifact because of the campaign...

Hmm... more like: Freelancer: Crossfire.

Add-on Modification for Freelancer expanding the universe, adding many new systems and even adding other new factions to the game, such as the Dom'Kavash and the Coalition.

Ok, i've never played X2, but i much prefer X3's combat to Freelancer's. Freelancer is just way too arcadey. Also, you can play without doing the story and use the mouse.

I'm currently playing a Star Wars mod for Freelancer called Tides of War, its been modded excellently, has a very good and moderately friendly player base, and theres another version set to come out some tome in the future.

Damnit, y'all piqued my interest enough for me to find a copy of freelancer and get the Star Wars mod for it, get myself all set up with all the various bits and bobs I needed.... and lo, all of the bloody servers are down

I play a mod called discovery, it is very nice and won a award or two.

As for X2/ X3 i own x3 and the elarning curve is only steep if you jump in. a little reading and some guides and your on your way to greatness of many many argon battleships

I've gotta say, it is my favorite spacebased game of all time. Then again, my pc is crap and I havent been able to play anything that has come out in the past 3 years.
