It depends on your definition of "non-humanoid". For example, these guys and these guys are perfectly decent examples of what I would call non-humanoid races/species that would still be acceptable in terms of scale.

I'm not sure I should apply, I'm on vacation from the 12th to the 21th but otherwise this sure does sound interesting. I leave it up to you if it is allright for me to join in or not. Eitherway, here is the application for it:
Background about the Race

The race of the Cimaras is one of the oldest existing races in the universe. Curiously enough though, they're also the race with the least influence in Wars or Diplomacy. They've chosen a life of total Isolation from the rest of the galaxy and so it doesn't come as a surprise that up until recently, few really know about them.
Even more interesting of a fact is that still most races had contact with the Cimara at one time or another as they tend to observe species on their way to the space age. On Planet Earth the Cimaras are known as Will o' the wisp or any being that looks like it is made out of light. They also had similiar appearances on other planets and amongst other races as well.
The Cimaras are overall extremely cowardish in nature and their society is entirely based upon safety, being careful and being especially careful. Isolation is basically their religion and they live it to religious zeal. Something curious must have happened that they now sent Diplomates. The ones they sent as Diplomates, while still being utter cowards are slightly different from the rest of their species. They often appear somewhat loony and that is most likely because of the fact that they are. They're sending their insane brethren to deal with outsiders.
Shape of the Cimara:
The race of cowards entirely consists of energetic beings. They're a sentient collection of different forms of energy. They're not reliant on food or air to survive but need outer sources of power to regenerate. So basically a cold darkroom could kill them in a matter of minutes or seconds, depending on intensity while standing inside a nuclear reactor would be like a summer vacation to them.
In their natural shape they're a hovering sphere of light but when they're near other sentient races they often tend to mimic another shape and then stick to it for several cycles. Of course with them being light, it's still just light and looks like light in varying degrees.
They're capable of minor energy manipulation and use it to produce soundwaves for the use of communication with other races or minor tricks.
Character:
Gabrielle is one such Cimara. Somewhere along its path it has visited Terran Space and there mimiced the shape of an average human female. Ever since then, the entity calls itself Gabrielle and considers itself a terran woman while it is obvious by the luminosity and her completely featureless humanoid shape that she isn't.
Remember the part where the Cimara send their insane brethren to meet outsiders? Gabrielle is a complete nutjob. Her comments will often appear totally random and her manic depressions aren't exactly helping either.
Still, Gabrielle possesses the same feats that her race does possess.
Abilities, Strengthes and Weaknesses:
Energy Manipulation - Describes the power to transform energy to influence the outer world. For example changing raw electricity into kinetic energy. Can NOT soak up excess energy, instead must transform it within limits. Too much energy leads to collapse of entity in a state of "drugged mind". (thus, can not function as Energy Shield)
Immunity to hunger and air - Does not feel hunger in the classic sense since it does not possess digestion. However is highly dependant on outer energy sources.
Phasing - Can phase through conducting metals by transforming her own energy into electricity, guiding it through and reshaping on the other side. However during that period she is quite vulnerable towards input from outer energy sources. And she'll probably fry any circuits on her way.
Walking Battery - Gabrielle can provide some of her own essence to provide Energy. However she must feed on other energy sources quickly after or she simply dies.
Gabrielle comes with no possessions.
Gabrielle thinks she might be useful in environments where organic lifeforms fail but also feels it necessary to point out that within areas of no outer energy source, she would not be reliable. She is a risk that could prove as an invaluable asset in some situations and as downright dead weight in others.

Looks like a great bio :D. One question, though; is it harmed by projectiles ? You said that the species was, for all intents and purposes, 'pure energy', so wouldn't they go right though ? Or melt ? Meh. Just wanted to know.

And a bullet... good point. I'd say it sort of goes straight through without losing impact power but brings the inner core into complete disorder so it takes a while to pick itself back together. Sort of like blowing a stream of air into a foggy cloud, only that this cloud can put itself together afterwards. Bullets or any physical object for that matter doesn't exactly kill it directly but cause it to become incapable of actions for a while.
And well indirectly those can kill too by burying the being in something dark without energy.
Other projectiles like Plasma or other Energyweapons would quickly overload it of course and lead to a state of "druggedness". So no immunity to weapons here

Species/Race: Cho. Cho are a humanoid rodent species. They have a long thin tail and short fur across their body. They are powerful melee fighters and shun ranged combat. Fur colour varies amoung individuals; recorded colours include brown, grey, black and white.
Occupation: Nova Tec researcher
Rank: In charge of the Melee Weapons Sub-group
History: Charton is one of 15 genetically engineered Cho. In an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior Cho scientists altered the DNA of several subjects; the project was deemed a failure when the resulting subjects showed little violent tendencies. Charton has spent his life working as a weapon designer for Nova Tec, where he has developed many new close combat weapons. Nova Tec was asked to send personnel for Project Aurora; they sent Charton.

Traits: Constantly nervous. Often sniffs the air, checking for danger.

Abilities/Training: The Super Soldier Project has given him improved reflexes and agility. His intelligence has been boosted as well.
Personality: Often gives long technical descriptions to even the simplest task. Can turn anything into a weapon.
Possessions: Battle Staff. A device of his own creation, the Battle staff consists of a two metre long metal shaft ended with energy generators. When the activation button is depressed the generators charge up and pass on the charge into targets. By spinning the Staff around with the globes active he can create an energy wall capable of blocking projectiles. The globes can be varied in power; lowest setting meerly stuns, but full power can shatter rock. Power is only used when the weapon makes contact, and a full power hit drains nearly a third of the energy.

I explictely made a character that is NOT suitable for combat but instead more adapt to environmental hazards. She possesses no weapon and her capabilities for energy manipulation are too minor to be considered a weapon.
