Computer won't pick it up and now the DVD drive has stopped working as well.
When I open 'my computer' the CD and DVD icons are missing.

I'm not sure but I think the autoplay on your xp has malfunctioned/glitched.
I've had this happen before...
But Just to be sure, when you insert a disk into your drive, autoplay doesn't start up? or are you just getting nothing at all. (like no cd/dvd drive in my computer or it appears empty.)

Your problem might be a physical one. Something is probably wrong with the connecting heads, maybe a bit of dust that got lodged in it, blocking the connection. Try disconnecting the drive and cleaning the connecting pin heads and sockets with some WD40, then see what happens.
