How big is too big?

Archives for ships and fleets. 'nuff said. Most of the ships here are very very old and will not work in current versions of BSF or SM. You have been warned!

How big is too big?

Post by Parsec »

In lieu of the normal "hi, your gam is coo" introduction, I've decided to come with gifts (well...gift) for my first post. Here's a bit of backstory on "Reason" (+6 for whoever gets the weapon system reference), the largest (functional) ship I have ever created.

I've been watching these forums for a good month or so now, taking in all of the different ships designs and I've noticed for all of the great designs, no one has made that one "HUEG" ship that I had been looking for. As I had been experimenting with the layered warship design (the Horatio Nelson was a big inspiration, you could almost call it the father of this ship), I felt that would be the best direction to go in.

So I picked up the Shipmaker 3 beta, and 1916 pieces later it is finished. (Novercalis stole some of my thunder with the massive [and excellent] Death Star design, and I feel your pain: layer after layer takes it out of you.)

This shot was taken with surfaces off (for some reason, you can zoom out a LOT farther this way), and with the sandbox at 3000 by 3000. Reason is on the right, and the Horatio Nelsons are on the left.

So there she is. I don't like the square sides (my wife called it a giant pencil, but I can fix that later if I wish) and I had to give up on any semblance of an engine section (I ran out of room plus the ship maker lags very badly at this point), but I am overall happy.

Here is a closer shot in Shipmaker:

And just to quiet any parenting freaks, this shot shows my hard work:

Image

I desperately wanted an action shot of the ship, but the frame rate took such a hammering with the latest version of the ship that it was all but impossible. It's a pure broadside ship, with guns that I took off of Mjolnir's Battlefleet Gothic ships (I had to up the range, but the projectile volley is the same, just with more guns! :D) and a bit of beamers thrown in for good measure.

The only shot I have is of the Horatio Nelson showing off just how big this ship is:

Image

This is a screen filler, ladies and gentlemen. It's a wall of layered green. If you would like to make your CPU melt (I was averaging one frame when I spawned it in, even before I unfroze the ships) I can put up a download when I am good and happy with it.

Here's the technical jargon:

Blasters x a whole lot
Fire Rate: 5
Clipsize: 30
Reload: 90
Damage: 75
Range: 1800
Deviation: 2
Turning: default
HP: default

Beamers x less then the blasters but still a whole lot:
Fire Rate: 0
Clipsize: 1
Reload: 500
Damage: 100 (might need to tone that down, will test later)
Range: 2000
Deviation: default
Turning: Default
HP: Default

The ship has 90 deflectors (considering it has 1916 parts, that isn't even 5% of the ships total. That's like making a 50 part ship and giving it ONE deflector. This number may change. Two Demeter launchers, 50 drones a spawn, and some Impeders with a few point beams round out the defense.

So then. I'd love to hear what you have to say.

TL;DR hi, i leik you gam. it coo.

Wow...
How long does that thing take to load in game?

And indeed, it does look like a giant pencil. IN SPACE!

Definately tone down sir! That's 100 damage per frame which makes for 3000 damage per second multiplied by the duration of the beam (around 5 ish) multiplied by the amount of beamers!

And it fires again after only 30 seconds anyway!

Other than that, sufficiently awesome stationery there!

This. It doesn't matter how big it is, if it just looks like a brick with a pointed front.

*Aralonia chokes, dies

Though that is an immensely badass ship, it's ugly.

Not as ugly as the Danny420Dale modifications to the Nelson...

...but it's holyshit big.

See Executor vs. Manticore.

But that's another story entirely. :P

First of all, I'm happy to see so many responses so quickly. That makes me feel fuzzy. And now for responses in order

Long enough. Since it was created on my system, it seems to load a bit quicker for me then it would others, but around ten minutes to get the "face direction" option and another two after that.

And that's one for my wife's pencil assessment.

Noted, I figured it worked that way. And thanks for....I guess that's a compliment?
It is big, but no style or aesthetics points for you, boyo. Razz
I would LOVE to finish it, but as the ship maker lags to death as it is, it seems it must remain a giant pencil.

Same as above.

Big, yes. Ugly, yes. Perhaps I really should try to finish it. It seems like it would top 2500+ parts, though.

Perhaps a giant pencil sharpener? Hmm, that'd make it worse. How about a giant piece of paper?
Ok, what *is* that ship?
Popular consensus seems to be a giant, bad-ass ugly pencil.
The Brickcil!
She gets a half a point for that.
