There's been a lot of talk recently about mini metagames, tournaments and etc. so I thought I'd get the ball rolling by posting a set of tournament rules that i've been working on recently and I've pretty much finalised. I've designed it to allow as much customisation as possible with pretty much every value, weapon and thruster defined by the builder, because that's what bsf shipbuilding is really about. Below I've posted a tournament plan, a shipbuildign ruleset and a calculator to allow you to create your own custom weapons for use on your ship(s). These rules are based on the meta 2.0 style ruleset and have been tested and balanced to a certain amount, but any feedback on using these rules would be greatly appreciated. I hope to soon post examples of tournament fleets made with this system.
The Competition:For this tournament plan each competitor will need to submit two ships; a large cruiser vessel (max size 120) and a smaller corvette (max size 60) which will fight in various battles. The tournament is planned to take place over 4 rounds which will judge different abilities of each competitor's ships and rank them by the cumulative score overall as follows:
Round 1: Appearance (20 points)
Ships will be judged on the aspects of aesthetics and functional appearance
Round 2: The Fleet Competition (40 points)
Fleets will consist of 1 cruiser and 2 corvettes. This main event will consist of a league system followed by a double knockout competition using the seedings from the league. each battle we consist of the best of three ai fights
Round 3: The Cruiser Competition (20 points)
Using rankings from the fleet round, a single knockout tournament will happen where two cruisers will be pited against each other.
Round 4: Tag Team Battle (20 points)
The final competition will pit 4 of one player's corvettes against another players cruiser, and vice versa. This will be a league style competition
Final score ?/100
Other Rounds: e.g 2vs2/2vs1, "Take Down the Mothership" (any ideas welcomed)
The Shipbuilding Ruleset:Section 1: ClassFirstly choose the class of vessel you would like to build. to be fully entered in the competition you must build one of each class.
Class A: Cruiser
The main ship of the competition, will be used for all rounds. Max size 120 (without shield)
Class B: Corvette
The secondary fleet ship. Will be used in the secondary fleet and tag team competitions. Max size 60 (without shield)
Section 2: Mass and Power Allowance-Mass: Round your ship's size (without shield) to the closest multiple of 5. Then square it. This is your ship's MASS ALLOWANCE (totally not ripped)
-Power: Round you ship's size to the closest multiple of 5. Square this and multiply by 0.4. This is your ship's POWER ALLOWANCE
why have a ship smaller than the max size? the larger the ship the slower and the bigger a target it is, simple.
a ship must have atleast it's size*0.1 number of sections
Section 3: MountingsEvery Weapon and thruster on your ship requires a mounting to deliver power to it. each size has a maximum amount of mass and power it can support
Fixed Mountings: used for thrusters and fixed weapons such as missile arrays (which shoulad have an arc range set to 0)
-small: mass 50 mass, mass allowance: 250, power allowance: 100
-medium: mass 75 mass, mass allowance: 500, power allowance: 200
-large: mass 100 mass, mass allowance: 1000, power allowance: 400
Mobile Mountings: used for most weapons. note, multi weapon turrets can be used, but all weapons must be the same, and costs is equal one weapon with a burst value equal to the number of weapons mounted on the turret. hp should be that of the turret section (which does not contribute to the overall armour mass of the ship). clip size, fire rate, reload time, turn speed, arc range, firing arc and range should be those of the driver. all others should be that of the firing weapon.
-small: mass 100 mass, mass allowance: 250, power allowance: 100
-medium: mass 150 mass , mass allowance: 500, power allowance: 200
-large: mass 200 mass, mass allowance: 1000, power allowance: 400
Section 4: ThrustersThrusters are used to provide propulsion for a vessel, and must me placed on a fixed mounting. There are three types available, each of which provide different ratios of speed, acceleration and truning to mass and power. These total values will then be divided by the overall mass of your ship to give you the ships speed, acceleration and turn speed. You can use any mix of thrusters on a ship. Decide the mass of thruster you want (or the power if you want to define it by that) and calculate the other values from there. All thrusters must be represented on the ship, and must remove their contribution to the ships speed and manoueverability when destroyed.
-Chemical Thrusters: your average thrusters provided a balance of everything. Power = mass*0.4
Speed = mass*10
Acceleration = mass*0.25
Turning = mass*4
-Fusion Thrusters: provide very high speeds, but poor manoueverability. Power = mass *0.5
Speed = mass*16
Acceleration = mass*0.2
Turning = mass*2
-Ion Thrusters: provide low speeds, but very high manoueverability. Power = mass *0.5
Speed = mass*4
Acceleration = mass*0.3
Turning = mass*6
seeing as a couple of people have now had trouble with them, i'll post a quick guide.
step 1 - decide on what type of thruster you want to use. chemical for a balance of everything, ion for more acceleration and turning or fusion for more speed (and you can use different thrusters of different types on one ship)
step 2 - decide upon the mass of the thruster you want to use (note, this must not exceed the maximum for the mounting)
step 3 - calculate from this the power requirements of the thruster (note, this must not exceed the maximum for the mounting)
step 4 - calculate the speed, acceleration and turning values from the mass of the thruster (note, these may be in thousands or tens of thousands, this is perfectly normal)
step 5 - when your ship is complete, divide the total speed, acceleration and turning values from all thrusters by the ships used mass to find your ships speed, turning and acceleration
example:
i choose to have a 1000 mass chemical thruster
from this i can calculate that it will use 1000*0.4=400 power
and will produce 1000*10=10000 speed, 1000*0.25=250acceleration and 1000*4=400 turning
as my ship has a total used mass of 5000, it's speed, turning and acceleration will be 10000/5000=2 speed, 250/5000=0.05 acceleration and 4000/5000 = 0.8 turning
Section 5: WeaponsNow onto the fun part! choose from the following list of allowed weapons:
-blaster
-gat blaster
-gat pulse
-beamer
-megabeam
-mining beam
-scatter beam
-plasma
-pulse
-missile
-minimissile
-tac nuke cannon
-plasma ball
-repeating artillery
-vulcan cannon
-particle rifle
-torpedo
-flash bolter
-tesla
-machine gun
-autocannon (no submunitions)
-particle cannon (no submunitions)
stats: anything you like! (within reason of course, no single single shot killer weapons) type them in to the weapon mass and power calculator and get the results.
Section 6: Armoursection hp: 1hp=1mass, simple (core hp counts toward armour mass)
Section 7: The Shieldall ships should have a shield (e.g. TBE_shields/TBE_Shield5) that should cover the front half of the ship. a shield should also have a range 0.1 nanomatrix to repair it which should never run out of energy
-shield hp: 1hp = 1mass, 1power
-shield recharge: 0.02hp per frame = 1mass, 1power
Section 8: Entrypost a shipmaker pic, and a .zip or .rar containing the .shp file, .sb4 file, all sprites and a sheet containing the ships stats so that i can analyse it and check everything's correct.
Weapon Calculator:IMPORTANT CHANGEFound here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?izww7jnu7bnp0o0Just put in the shipmaker values and it'll give you the weapon's mass and power requirements for attaching it to your ship.
