Ok, after around a one year break from shipbuilding… I come back again to the Shipyards. My lurking has given me much knowledge, and I hope I now know what a good ship looks like and how to build one.

EDIT: Well, maybe not how to...

I remember my past space opera was called “StarPaths”, but I felt that was a corny name. It’s the same storyline, same race factions, but just the name’s different. Backstory and faction infos can be found here: http://www.wyrdysm.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4857

As of this first post, the year is 3722 A.F., nearing the end of the Piracy Wars.

I’ll get started with the Royal Earthan Navy:

Reunified Earthan Navy (REN)

Image
"Katie" Scout
Scouts are sent as recon units as single-manned craft. They are the fastest in the Navy, and are the only ones capable of chasing LSK speedcraft, but are notoriously fragile.

Image
Amber-class Frigate
Frigates were originally used as transports, however with the increasing rate of losses due to pirate raids on convoys, the transports were outfitted with decent weaponry to defend themselves. Frigates nevertheless suffer the highest casualty rate in the Navy, and the LSK are reputed to have their own fleet of captured frigates.

Image
Cynthia-Class Destroyer
A medium-sized ship designed to patrol designated passive airspace and as an escort. It is relatively well-armed compared to its size, and the mere presence of a destroyer is capable of maintaining the peace. Destroyers occasionally operate in packs of three in combat, but can fend for itself by all means.

Image
Havana-class Cruiser (Prototype model)
Large ships designed to provide support in unstable (fringe) areas, or places prone to raids or attack. They are deployed as support artillery or heavy escorts. Early cruisers were made from the remnants of the UWA fleet and were poorly armed. Earthan Cruisers nowadays are decked out in Grade V Neptunian Armor, and are armed with 60-inch cannons. As cruisers are under the command of different admirals, each cruiser is usually extensively modified. However, every admiral knows that the cruiser's most vulnerable spots are the struts connecting the Neptunian plates to the hull and the engine exhausts.

"Evangeline" Carrier (No Data Available)
Currently, Navy officials are planning on retaking the Second Sector, and simulations demonstrate the need for mobile depots where recon Scouts can refuel, reload, and repair. The Earthan Assault Carrier is currently the project of the Sector 3 Shipyards. Initial construction has begun. The Royal Earthan Navy intends at least three carriers in a month.

Earthan Mobile Command Center "Iris" (No Data Available)
In correspondence to the assault carrier, officials also discovered the need for a mobile command center, ridding the need of having to report back to Mars HQ. Sector 3 Shipyards have also been given the responsibility of designing a Command Center that is capable of advancing with the fleet. No reports on their progress for now.

Image
H-L "Rachel" Defense Station
Staple in Naval defense, these defensive "checkpoints" are used to safeguard anything between public infrastructure to Sector 3 government and military areas. Boasting two "Enke" cannons, two swarm-missile pods and constructed nearly out of solid B-level Neptunium, their resilience is quite remarkable, and many a foe had not the knowledge that a battered defense station was nevertheless a dangerous one paid for it with his life.
Image
Earthan DS-05 engaging in a military exercise

Image
"Valentine" Cruiser Missile
Quote:
To go through the asteroid belt is to for a one-way ticket to Hell.

Given that, it was a general rule of thumb that no one dared venture there. Even if Warlord Og's ship (with a $930 million dollar on his head) stalled just outside, no one would dare getting within firing distance of the Stone Forest. After Warlord Og did manage to limp back to his base on one malfunctioning engine, and with the development of the new CO-5 explosives, plans were made for giant "cruiser" missiles that would accellerate until they hit their target, the payload guaranteed to do the job. While the job was originally granted to the government-run Sector 3 industrial complexes, issues with construction and information leaks allowed private companies to manufacture their own. Swordsman Enterprises built two operating prototypes, which were used as part of the First Battle of Neptune.

Image
Vicki-Class Transport
Perhaps the oldest model in existence in the Earthan Dominion. The transport is designed to be able to shuttle goods between a planets' surface and its orbiting space stations, all the while being able to carry quite large and heavy loads. The large bays inside give it a fat and bloated appearance, and its lack of armor or armament makes it highly prized by LSK speedcraft. Recent disturbances have led transport ships to mount C-III cannons, and many commanders illegally modify their engines to use the thruster's potential power as powerful turbine cannons.

League of Silent Knives

They may be amateurs, but they aren't noobs. The only difference between an LSK pilot and one of the Navy is a matter of an official diploma. As REN officials do not have actual blueprints of these ships, the only documentation we have are shots taken during combat, and pilot testimonies.

Image
"Runners" (aka Scout Craft)
These little buggers are fast, extremely fast, capable of dodging torpedoes with ease. They do so with the sacrifice of armor and gear, but they are far from harmless. Armed with an EMP torpedo, twin "Naeil" cannons and two rear-facing rocket launchers, the runner is capable of incapacitating an enemy, leaving before it can recover and retaliate. Runners often precipitate larger attacks, their EMP torpedoes making the largest cruisers sitting ducks for the artillery.

Image
Stalker-Class Frigate
These ships tend to shadow their target, as their name suggests, relying on its 6-pack of HV missiles, rather than the standard thermite cannons, as its main weapon. As this design is more designed to slow down fleeing enemies rather than destroy them, Stalkers are percieved more of as a nuisance than an actual threat.

Image
Hunter-Class Frigate
The most-feared ship by civilian transports and cruiser admirals alike. A medium-ranged craft carrying four to six autocannons, the Hunter is heavy enough to deal significant damage to any ship. Hunters also extensively use their thermite cannons, which also perform exceptionally at medium range.

Image
Yes baby, pity that poor ship which you can't see now, and won't see ever again.
Slayer-Class Frigate
The short-range assault frigate. Using four to six fully automatic "Naeil" cannons firing 75 cm long spikes designed to penetrate thin armor, this ship is usually dispatched to finish off an already weakened target, and has enough firepower to shred any unresisting ship to pieces.

Smaller ones have good flow and look nice. The bigger ones seem a bit cluttered and a bit random. Coloring is nice on all ships.

Yeah, the smaller ones flow together nicely but the larger ones seem to lose coherency, and the shapes aren't as well defined.

I know they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but whatever you were aiming for with the Destroyer and Dreadnought.. well, the outcome is terrible, to put it bluntly.

Plus, as far as dreadnoughts go, it's pretty wimpy looking and small. I'm hoping it's not meant to be to scale, or they must only have a couple dozen destroyers.

The frigate isn't too bad but the engines on the wings look weird, and the GNR2 spine and nose don't do it many favours.

I like where the fleet is going, though. Very interesting.

I'm aware that the Dreadnought is wanting. It's still in the shipyards, undergoing remodeling and stuff. To save money and resources, some armor around the core will be removed (clutter-removal?), and secondary weapon systems will be added.

Oh, and just to fit the RPG, the Royal Earthan Navy isn't in the best shape right now--after a century of war, resources aren't that easy to come by. So, please understand that the REN is unable to finance the "Monster Ship" you were expecting. Perhaps I'll change the class to "Battleship"?

If you think my destroyer is "not good", I think I'm going to need a lot of assistance in that. Not that I don't accept criticism, but I'm stumped at what further modifications are possible. Let suggestions fire away.

3722 A.F. Mars Airspace.

The Beagle Incident

Image
Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Golden Beagle 301 is now departing Quadrant 293-901. Code 24601. Awaiting confirmation, over.

Martian Airspace Dispatcher: Golden Beagle 301, you have permission to exit Quadrant 293-901, proceed to Quadrant 591-329. Shouldn't be too long of a trip, and you have the Navy nearby. Good Luck.

Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Affirmative, over.

Image
LSK Pilot1: Alright lads, let's see what this lady has on her.
LSK Pilot2: Little pigs, little pigs, we're a'coming in!

Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Martian Airspace Dispatch 3019, we are picking up unmarked signatures from LAC-21!

Martian Airspace Dispatcher: That's impossible. Check your readings again. The LSK have never been this close to Mars since the Second Reunification!

Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Negative that. It's them. I have two Hunter-class Frigates on my 11! More unmarked signatures coming in from LAC-21, 22, and 23!

Martian Airspace Dispatcher: Roger that. Get me Line 9595.
Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): Blair on the line, over.
Martian Airspace Dispatcher: LSK presence detected Quadrant 293-901. We have a lone transport sending out a distress signal on the outskirts, near Post 902, over.

Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): Bull-S***. The pirates have never dared close to Mars Airspace. Tell them to check their readings again.
Martian Airspace Dispatcher: They say they have two Hunters on visual, with more bearing down. I am linking you directly to them in 3, 2, 1.

Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Commodore, we have 2 Hunters bearing down at 11-o-clock, with more in the rear. We need immediate assistance, over!

Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): Jesus Christ... Negative. I have two Cynthia-class destroyers responding to your call. They will be in range in 90 seconds. Use everything you have to keep them from boarding! You'll have to hang in there, over.

Martian Airspace Dispatcher: You know that they won't last for five seconds if those dogs use their charge packs
Image
Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): They won't. It's a transport; they want the goodies inside.

Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): C-III Cannons, engage!

Image
LSK Pilot1: Gah... I'm hit!
LSK Pilot2: Arrrrrg...!

Image
Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Sir, we have confirmed hits on two LSK Hunter-class frigates. Their power systems are going critical.

Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): Well... good work, lads. We'll escort you for the rest of your journey.

Image
Martian Airspace Dispatcher: Commodore, we are detecting a space abnormalty! Our instruments are getting fuzzy. Give us a visual on what's going on over there, over.

Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): There's a light. A blue light, that's pulsing. It's too far away to tell what it is. What the hell have those barbarians been cooking up now? All deck hands, man all battlestations, man all battlestations! Initiating Code Yellow!

Image
Martian Airspace Dispatcher: Sir, three more Hunters have been sighted 160 clicks on the port side!

Image
Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): All battlestations online--... What the hell is THAT?
Martian Airspace Dispatcher: Sir, unidentifiable classification 30 clicks away from your battlegroup!

Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): All ships in vicinity, engage all unmarked ships!

Image
Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Roger that, over.
Image

Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): I have them on visual... Golden Beagle 301, what the hell are you doing???
Image
Image

Golden Beagle 301 (Transport): Threat neutralized. That ship was coming straight for us. It was as if it were trying ram us or bomb us. Either way, it was unaffected by our main cannon. We had no choice but to use our modified engine thrusters to...

Commodore Blair (Cynthia-class Destroyer): That is no excuse, gentlemen. You are completely aware of the rules and regulations: under no circumstances should the engines, turbines, reactors, and systems be tampered with! By breaking these rules, you have endangered the lives of thousands. Your thrusters could have detonated while in low orbit, or worse, while docked. I will have to report you for violation of regulations.

SWS Mod Edit: Well, if I gave you a warning for each time you broke Rule 12 in this one post, you would have gone through both your tempbans and would now be permabanned. Lucky for you, you only get one warning. I'm assuming you've read the rules, because there's no reason not to have read the rules. There is no excuse and I will not accept one. So you should know not to include large, uncropped screenshots in your posts. There are people who use 1024x768 resolution still, and that stretches the forum frames for them horrendously. If you want to include large, uncropped images in your posts in the future, link them or use thumbnails.

Omega Line

3722 A.F. Neptune Airspace (Sector 3) (Roughly 2 weeks after the Beagle incident)
Research Facility-007 vicinity. Security is at a constant Tier 5: Shoot now, ask questions later.

Civilian spacecraft are not allowed. All passing traffic must have special permits prerecorded days or weeks prior. The Omega Line, a standard line of five Defense Platforms, maintains that order. Having been worn down to two operating units by years of meteor storms and pirate attacks, they are currently awaiting reinforcements promised by the Dominion.

The Beagle Incident is relatively unknown by the media, save the fact that the captain of Golden Beagle 301 had been promptly discharged from the Navy, the engineers, executed. The "mysterious craft" is still under investigation by officials.

Defense Station 01: My instruments are getting fuzzy again. EMP must have fried my sensors. DS-02, give me a scan on NRO-8-603-793, over.
Defense Station 02: Roger that, scanning... D---. LSK must have hit my dishes, too. Negative that, my readings are distorted as well. Can you get a visual? That region is closer on your end than mine.

Image

Defense Station 01: Affirmative. Switching over to... holy-mother----.
Defense Station 02: DS-01, report!
Defense Station 01: I'm getting large solar-seizmic activity! My readings are going berserk! My God, reporting giant space rift, possible vortex 150 clicks from my position!
Defense Station 02: Mother mercy. (to Communications Operator) Get me Research Facility-007.
Research Facility-007: RF-007 on the line.
Defense Station 02: This is DS-02. Omega border region 08-603-793. We are reporting a large solar-seizmic rift roughly 200 clicks from your position. What tests are you currently conducting?
Research Facility-007: I'm afraid that's classified, Class 7 Seal. Above military orders, sir.
Defense Station 02: Well, terminate it. Now. There's no knowing what a seizmic rift this close may do.
Research Facility-007: Affirmative, over. (Terminating Test Order 17)

Image

Defense Station 01: Wha---? Good God... DS-02, I have a large unidentifiable battlegroup on visual!
Defense Station 02: Unknown classification, and no ID beacons... Attention, this is the Omega Line. You are intruding into restricted airspace. Identify yourself and leave, or pay the consequences!

Image

Defense Station 01: God, they're firing at me! Mayday, mayday, mayday! This is DS-01, we are taking heavy fire, I repeat, we are under heavy fire! We have contact, lots of 'em!
Defense Station 02: They're asking for it. Give 'em hell then!

Image

Defense Station 01: They're not LSK! Their weapons are going through my armor like cheese!

Image

Defense Station 01: Superstructure going critical! We're going to-- AAAAARRRRRHHHH!
Defense Station 02: DS-01, do you copy? DS-01, do you copy? (to Communications) Get me Local Controller Nep-6.

Image
LCN-6: This is Neptune Airspace Control, over.
Defense Station 02: LCN-6, this is DS-01 of RF-007. Requesting immediate reinforcements. We are under heavy attack. I repeat, we won't last long like this.

LCN-6: DS-01, I read you, sending two Cynthia-Class Destroyers and ten Katies to your position. They will be in-range approximately 180 seconds. That's the best I can do. You'll have to hold on until then.

Image

Defense Station 02: Let's give them a screwing they'll never forget! For Earth, for Humanity, eat this, you chumps!

Image
Defense Station 02: That's right, who's your daddy!

Image
Defense Station 02: Gahhhh! I'm breaking up!

Image
Cynthia-Class Destroyer: Open fire!

Image
"Katie" pilot 1: Their shields are too strong for us, captain! We're getting burned!
Cynthia Class Destroyer: Stand your ground! RF-007, evacuate! I repeat, evacuate! We are having multiple enemy encounters within 200 clicks of your position. Vacate now, and that's an order!
Research Facility-007: Affirmative. Activating pods.

Image
Image
Cynthia-Class Destroyer: Fall back, fall back! Mayday, mayday, mayday. This is the REN Everest, we are being overwhelmed by unknown-classification hostiles. Calling all REN warships! I repeat, we are falling back to point 8-073-382!

Cynthia-Class Destroyer: Gah, I'm hit! Subsystems going critical!

pretty nice. At first I thought the two ships docked with the station were massive weapon pods or something ;) I like the capital ship(cynthia class destroyer I think?) My favorite are the hunters(?) with the two forward struts. They look mean. Nice job, I'd download these.

Hey er, why are there non SW sections on the "Earthan Cruiser"? Other than that I like most of these ships. Your LSK ships have a nice refined pirate feel that I like. And your new little alien ships have cool glows. Overall good job.

I like the "ARRRRGGGHHH". Make more "ARRRRGGGHHH" and I will keep read it. It is interesting like a comic. I have never seen this kind of ships presentation. It is good. Hope you keep going!

MAW-01 (turret prototype)
Magnetically Accelerated Weapon

Fires a Neptunian bolt at nearly 9,000 km/h. Each bolt weighing around 1.25-50 tons each (depending on loadout), the projectile is launched by acceleration by hyper-electromagnets. The amount of energy required to fire such a weapon is quite enormous, and given the design of hyper-electromagnets, overheating is a major issue.

Rapid acceleration via electric pulse triggers a combustion reaction in Neptunian metal. The result is a white-hot streak that has the power to rip ships in two.

Your turret looks amazing and I love the cooldown sequence.

It might just be me but, I think that the turret would look better if the barrels shot back faster, I dunno.

I second what Icy said, but I feel the need to reiterate how great that trigger is. The cooldown is just plain sexy.
