@fatrat - thanks! the sprites needed to look realistic to actually look any good. i've only actually had BSF for about 2 weeks now...
@dyoano - the technique i learn from making realistic metal textures for 3d modelling. start with a mid grey, add lots of noise and apply oilify (or sponge if you're using photoshop) and you get a nice effect.
@Qinetix - i've got some bigger ships in the works. i've planned an escort carrier based on the destroyer hull, I'm thinking about a battleship (with plenty of artillery) and I've made a plan for a huge construction yard/fleet command/carrier station

almost finished now. all section sprites are made and i'm now pleased with the body of the ship. made HEAPEMAC sprites and working on other weapons now, but I'm thinking of redoing the main cannon as they're a bit bland
some slight changes, I put some extra sections at the back to protect the thrusters and widen that section as it looked too skinny. all sprites are now various shades of slate grey rather than just normal grey...

thanks. the colour change looks better in game, as the pure grey looks slightly red tinted and the blue looks more like the grey in ship maker. see the picture below, where I used a blue background instead of green.

update - missile launchers have been re-replaced with fusion cannon. all weapon sprites are now my own

yeah I've got plenty of ideas. I've currenty made designs for a light carrier based on the tesla hull, a light cruiser and a support frigate. I've made a pretty decent fighter that I'll post with the carrier. I'm also working on concepts for larger vessels (I need a big gunned battleship just for the awesomeness) and I've got a plan for a huge dock/command centre/airfiled?(in space...)/construction yard (dunno if my computers gonna be up for that). I'm officially off school for Easter now so I should have some time when I'm not catching up on coursework.
p.s. have you tried it in direct control? lmb to fire HEAPEMACs and rmb to fire the artillery. works nicely
p.p.s. I'm going to do an updated download with different variants of the design
p.p.p.s. I'm also planning on making versions of the stock sprites in this style, it'll take time though as each one will need atleast 4 different variants for the shading to work.

seriously? i thought it was pretty balanced and not really that overpowered, compared to metagame ships it's not that powerful for it's class. overpowered is the battleship I created using the same sprites, it can take out heavy battleships in single hits... (but i messed around with the sprites so it won't load any more *sadface*)
