Spriting thread

We should put our heads together and figure out how this game is going to look. It's obvious that the main thing holding us back right now is a cohesive art direction, because there is little point in making a bunch of content that will have to be completely redesigned down the road anyway.

Personally, the only thing I've done so far apart from sound design, is this rudimentary core sprite for the player ships:

You should make the glow on that core come in variety of colors

I think we should stick to the style that shiny currently uses, as that is the one we are all most familiar with as well as the best looking of the BSF ones.

If I'm not mistaken, a majority (though not all) of the shiny sprites are ripped from Front Mission: Gun Hazard - along with a few other sources. Even if you stick with that 'style', you'd need to design a whole new set of parts. Imitating the style, then, seems like a poor way to go.

On top of that, I'm pretty sure the player ships are supposed to be mostly predesigned/in large premade chunks - and the enemy ships are going to be a few different factions/species/whatever, but assembled from sections.

In both cases they should have distinctive styles. What I would do is have different people work on each different 'set'. As long as they work reasonably well together (so you don't have some chump off making retro tactical-display style when everyone else is doing gritty detailed stuff) but add their own flair, the results should have enough variance to make things easy to tell apart at a glance.

At this point id say that separate sprite sets for each of the 5 enemy races is probably a pipe dream. id settle for the 5 factions to just have different sets of ships.

player ships don't have to be pre drawn and cut up, i just suggested that because it might be easier to draw and probably look better too.

I tried making a few things and these are the ships I came up with. What do you guys think?

Frankly, they look pretty bad. Like they're made of paper, no detail, just solid colored shapes. Nothing to it.

Sry TH but yeah, rather bland. Maybe add some gradiented shading on some of the edges and some lines to give them a panelled effect.

I like the new shapes though!

What is the style of each of the 5 factions? (example : steampunk, high tech, circular etc.)

Having "Steampunk" as a style for spaceships would be the most amazingly dumb idea ever. Of all time.

"It bounces? Who makes a gun that bounces? This is the worst gun ever. Of all time."

On topic though,
Those sprites are really bland. Even the stock ones are better.
Were we going to try to move to a more realistic style?

The shapes are decent but...the sprites lack detail and just look rather boring.
