Special and Elite ships ARE meant to be breaking one thing or another, as long as deployment is limited and seeing that PD ship's defensive capabilities, it must be expensive and can only be deployed 1 per fleet, some fleets won't even get a chance on defeating high end factions without assistance of special ships, hell, if you look at the narayana artillery ship, it's what cause TEVs to retreat or even the oculus which nullifies beam based weaponry, yes a fleet can live without a special kind of ship, but what about those who can't do life without their support? your fleet can't even damage mine without your artillery.

Perhape, but the problem is that the ship that is described as a common combat ship has ridiculously powerful PD, so powerful it should probably pretty rare and considered a specialised PD ship when nerfed. And the things that are considered specialised PD ships are just nuts.

I think the Ashtic PD is actually overpowered. Kriken not so much.

Mind you, I always assumed that lasers (and such) would be the standard weapons and that kinetic guns would really only be used for extremely large, spammy zerg ships.

I never considered Kriken PD overpowered, just strong.
My main issue was with Ashtic.

Well, Doogie, perhaps you never expected that, but missiles and torpedoes are pretty much standard weapons now, and autocannons are frequently used by Nove, Ashtic and Rothnia, so you should probably balance accordingly.

Haven't touched these mofos yet, but I am thinking of changing Ashtic PD from particle guns to flak guns. Thoughts?

Both have their advantages. Flak guns are good for stopping large amounts of projectiles from afar, while particle guns are fine, versatile tools for clearing projectiles at various places, but at the cost of being less efficient against large amounts of incomming projectiles.

I'd stay with the particle guns if you want strong PD, as flaks are hard to balance if you want strong PD. They do make some nice PD systems if you choose to go with medium to low PD, but for strong PD they can be difficult to balance due to their behaviour

I'd stay with particle guns if I were you.
