Ratai Armada

Ratai Armada

Description:
Spoiler!
Sizeable migrant fleet currently searching for peaceful enough corner of galaxy to settle into. Ratai come from ancient civilization, once dominant in their corner of galaxy, but forced to leave their home systems behind by entity known as Darkness. Ratai are highly advanced race, but due to serious lack of resources, their technological level has deteriorated thousands of years backwards.

Ratai have basically two goverments, one civilian and one military. Both are dependant on each other and serious power struggles are rarity. In head of Military goverment is Grand admiral Gronn and collection of seven admirals that serve three years in their post before either replaced or re-elected.

Civilian goverment is slightly more disfunctional and wider with numerous interests and political players on the background. Essentially mega corporations and otherwise powerful or respected individuals rule the civilian goverment, much of the power circling around two forgery ships Baurus and Andarra that are the very beating heart of Ratai fleet - and Sleeper ship Keeper of memories, that carriers entire records, memories and scientific knowledge of Ratai onboard.

Guardian fleet has separate command and it hardly ever makes contact with core fleet due to risk of darkness infection. Commanding hierarchy of Guardian fleet is unknown.
Ratai ships:
Spoiler!
Ratai has one of the largest fleets of all WTFU factions - totalling 26.000+ out of which 12.000 are military. It is to be noted however that many of the civilian vessels too are least moderately armed and can be used as second line warships.

Majority of Ratai ships are old and even what is concidered "New" could be better translated as "most recently upgraded". Ratai ships - leave out the largest variants - are not awesomely powerful but can deal moderate damage to their opponents. Typical weaponry is different caliber autocannons and other ballistic weapons, railguns and sometimes pulse lasers or other low energy weapons. Special ships might have more exotic weaponry.

While Ratai have knowhow to construct variety of shields, this is not option for defence, due to sparse amount of resources available. Instead Ratai are forced to cope with armor plating and ballistic point defence weaponry. Almost every Ratai ship larger than frigate have some form of PD, and frontline warships have clear array of fast tracking, fast firing micro autocannons to intercept incoming missiles. Additionally, Ratai favor use of fighters, which explains amount of battlecarriers and in contrast lack of battleships and battlecruisers in Ratai armada.

Fleet strenghts:
-Effective point defence systems.
-Large figter capacity.
-Fleet size.

Fleet weaknesses:
-Ships somewhat weak against beam weaponry due to thin shape.
-Majority of the craft destroyer size or smaller.
-Lower technological grade than most factions.
Additional information about Ratai:
Spoiler!
Ratai evolved from predatory species of their home planet several million years ago, and over time became smarter and more intelligent. Early Ratai resembled somewhat that of a wolf found on earth by behaviour, owning strong social aspect and pack animal type behaviour. Ratai may look somewhat like reptilian for human, but that guess misses truth by far. Ratai have fur for example, although it is very short and very thin, in progress of disappearing through evolution - just as it does with humans. Ratai seses have common predatory asepects. Good hearing and good ability smell. In contrast their eye sight is somewhat inferior to humans, but still accurate enough to be used as primary source of information. Ratai do not see full spectrum of colors, but their world is more of an red - green - gray painted.

As leftover from their predatory days, Ratai still posses enormous bite force despite their somewhat small mouth, and two long claws on both hands. Ratai have three fingers, the third one far shorter, functioning bit like thump underneath the two longer fingers. Average Ratai is roughly that of human in size, perhaps little shorter. It is virtually inpossible for human to tell female and male Ratai from another unless subject is butt naked. Names do not help with this either, for there have no typical female or male Ratai names.

Finally, Ratai do not recognize each other from facial features as humans mainly do, but instead look for the structure that extends from their heads. For every Ratai it is as unique as is human's iris or fingerbrint. Much of it is relatively light and hollow, not containing overly large brain, but instead organ that is very sensitive to preassure. This strange sixth sense is also leftover from early days of Ratai specie, when they had not yet discovered fire, or grown into functional civilization. The organ serves as sort of early warning system that predicts rapid changes of weather by sensing sudden change in atmospheric preassure. Because of very slow rotation around its own axis, Ratai home planet typically had storms and hurricanes that make anything found on earth seem like gentle breeze. Sudden drop or increase of atmospheric preassure usually predicted that some sort of nasty storm was soon to form and creatures knew to take cover in advance. These days, in space, such sense is little use but Ratai are still able to tell if someone enters or leaves the room by just simply feeling brief, faint change in preassure of that room.

Ratai weapons:

-Collecting and adding weapons stats here soon-

Fighter craft.
(Zoomed pictures)

FF11 Interceptor
Image
Spoiler!
Numerically most common of all fighter craft in Ratai Armada. The interceptor MK11 is very old design that has been improved and worked on over long period of time. Upgraded and patched time to time, the 11th generation of this craft has been found good balance between cost and performance. It is estimated that roughly 17000 fighters of this model in total are currently housed in 904 active battlecarriers that serve in Ratai fleet. The count does not include the civilian craft able to launch fighters.
Size: ~7
HP: 40
Armament: 2x Micro pulse lasers.

FF34/D Bomber.
Image
Spoiler!
Bombers are more often used in offensive campaings of Ratai, and are far less common than interceptors (~4000). Designed to engage heavier craft more than other fighters, bomber is slower and bulkier than more nimble interceptor and in dogfight might not fare so well. Still, slow is relative term with this craft, FF34/D still being able to most of the time move faster than turrets of its target can track. The craft is extremely vulnurable to missiles and beams though...
Size: ~10
HP:50
Armament: 2x Short range HESSM.
FF20 Guardian interceptor.
Image
Spoiler!
Special fighter craft, launched from Guardian fleet carriers. The FF20 is mix of both bomber and fighter, able to deliver punch against larger targets, and still agile enough to succesfully engage other fighter craft. FF20 is nessesity when engaging Darkness fighters for normal interceptors would not stand a chance. Serving under Guardian fleet, which is separe from Ratai fleet command, this fighter craft is used only against Darkness, and will not be seen in conflicts with other races - unless you are engaging Guardian fleet yourself of course. Only several hundred has been built over time.

Size: ~10+
HP: 50
Armament:
2x Micro pulse lasers.
2x Micro Beam laser.

Frigates:

Chaser class
Image
Spoiler!
Small, fast tracking and moving ship of Ratai, dedicated to hunt other small craft, or harrass bigger ones from rear. It uses same laser weaponry as Ratai interceptors and thus is only vessel of Ratai (besides of fighters) that do not use traditional kinetic turrets. Much of the hull space goes for reactor core, drive core and engine components, leaving chaser with no space for flak ammunition storage. Due to this, chaser does not have point defense weaponry.
Size: 40
HP: 150
Armament:
2x pulse lasers on 360 decree rotating turrets.
Speed: 4
Acceleration: 1
Turning: 2

Hammerhead

Image
Spoiler!
Small anti capital ship of Ratai, wielding short range, high damage weaponry with poor tracking, making them almost hopeless against other small craft. Weaponry most likely includes miniture nuclear tac missiles, but is still up to depate.

Hammerhead MK2

Image
Spoiler!
Hammerhead MK2 is attempt to fuse chaser and original hammerhead into one hull in order to have flexible general purpose frigate that can handle tasks of both craft. In a way, MK2 succeeds in this, although it cannot quite reach the performance of its parent ships in their respective area of field - there simply is not enough space withing the 38 meter long hull to do this. Hammerhead MK2 abandons one of the torpedo batteries in order to give space for the reactor core to power up the two frigate size pulse lasers. Unfortunately Hammerhead MK2 cannot support as large core as Chaser does with the torpedo rack taking space - thus reducing the power output. Result is ship that cannot deliver as mighty payload as Hammerhead MK1 to enemy capital ships, and frigate that cannot as effectively engage other small ships as Chaser - but still handles better than either of the two in any task not their own, meaning that MK2 is success when it comes to resource saving. With Hamerhead's hull being better suited for the mixture, the line of chaser frigates is slowly being scrapped and being replaced by HMK2
Size:38
HP:190
Armament:
2x pulse lasers.
1x Torpedo launcher.
Destroyers:
Angel Class
Image
Spoiler!
Among the smallest of Ratai warships, angel is fast and agile escort / recon ship with low profile and fast tracking weaponry - making it able anti fighter / corvette ship - and little else than just that.
Size:72
HP: 300
Armament:
2x Light autocannons.
2x Flak turrets.
2x Internal platforms for missiles / probes.

Teus Class
Image
Spoiler!
With average service age of two hundred years, Teus are what could be described as grandpa of the fleet. Upgrades and other than basic maintenance of these ships was ceased over hundred years ago, but still they keep running. Teus is space ship, so simple that even 6 year old Ratai could design such, and so endurable in terms of aging that there has been debate about resuming production of this ship class. Teus does not perform brilliantly in any role. It has too "loud" Radar signature, making it not good option for scouting. It has limited flak ability, making it not that good for escort. It has moderate weaponry that can do its job, but it is not real killer either. It is mostly this lack of any strong area where it would shine or fail that makes this ship so commonly seen all around the fleet. It is to be noted that there is lot of jokes about Teus in the fleet.

Demigod (Guardian fleet)
Image
Spoiler!
Only seven ships of this class exist in Ratai Armada. That is pretty much where all that is certainly known about these ships end. There are many wild guesses about why and what Demigod class destroyers are, but nothing can be confirmed. Most likely the secrecy around these ships is not because they would be somehow uniquely special, but cause they are able to craft to Ratai special operations fleet - only thing more secret than these ships.
Size:91
HP:400
Armament: Not confirmed. Examinations suggest least four Autocannon turrets of mid - heavy caliber, internal weapon point and heavy point defence grid.

Arime (Ratai - Mioran hybrid)
Image
Spoiler!
Named after the system where agreement to build 20 of these ships was made. Arime could be called symbol of Ratai - Mioran alliance, and what things the two species can archieve once common language and ground is found. With no lack for materials, Ratai engineers can for first time since ever open that lockbox of ancient Ratai ship building knowledge and come up with this - of course.. with not to be diminished imput of Mioran engineers that gives the shape and impressive power grid for this small ship.

As the Materials to build these ships come all from Miora, they have the typical color of Mioran ships. The white stripes indicate ship is under Ratai ownership - and ship with no stripes belongs to Miora. Several test variants exist, this particular ship type A, with all Ratai weaponry.

Simulations suggest that this ship can outclass all the typical Ratai destroyers, discount Demigod.

Size:84
HP:420
Armament:
2x Particle turrets (Ratai replica of Mioran weapon design)
4x Light pulse lasers.
1x Ultra cannon (light)

Cruisers:

Dragonfly (light cruiser)
Image
Spoiler!
Serving in escort role, Dragonfly is ship that can cover other ships with its long range point defence weaponry, but as warship in its own right, it does not perform well. Lightly armoured and armed, this ship is barely more powerful than Ratai destroyer. Despite this, it is commonly seen in heavy fleet battles, mostly intercepting missiles. It is indeed in fleet where this ship can show its strenght - not with blowing up enemies, but protecting its own. In solo this ship is mostly useless.

Size:100.5
HP:470
Armament:
6x Long range micro cannons.
4x Light autocannons.
Guardian class (Heavy cruiser)
Image
Spoiler!
Guardian is unusually heavily armoured ship of Ratai and only ship standing in class of heavy cruiser. Newer and more powerful than old Stormbringer, Guardians have began to take over duties from their older cousins, least partially replacing some of the retiring ships in near future. Armed mostly with heavy kinetic weaponry, Guardian is best used against ships of its own size - or even larger due to its heavy armour.
Size: 107
HP: 620
Armament:
2x Heavy Autocannons.
2x Medium Autocannons.
2x Gravimetric missile launchers (2 missiles/ launcher)

Stormbringer Class (missile cruiser)
Image
Spoiler!
Old cruiser type of Ratai, easily past its retirement years, but still widely used as it is less expensive to repair and retrofit such ship rather than build completely new. Stormbringer is slightly larger than Guardian, but less armoured and due to its limited hull structure - less armed. This ship is used in far closer combat ranges than it was originally intended, but Ratai require first line of ships sitting between their carriers and incoming fire. While Guardian is to replace this ship somewhere in uncertain future, Stormbringer is still common sight and will be for decades.
Size: 134

4x Gravimetric missiles (3 missiles / launcher)
2x Heavy autocannons.
4x Flak turrets.

Battlecarriers

Overseer
(Light variant)
Image
Spoiler!
Overseer is smallest of Ratai battlecarriers and something not meant for heavy frontline engagements. More common role of this ship is to provide fleet wide fighter cover while staying far enough from enemy, or to serve as a home base and command unit for fighter patrols protecting ratai interest. Barely armoured at all, even smaller ships can cause serious damage to Overseer - or if lucky, even destroy it by hitting magazine or hangar full of ordinance. Out of all carriers, Overseer has heaviest flak cover, giving it moderate protection against ballistic weapons such as rockets and missiles.

Spoiler!
White star is medium class battlecarrier able to launch two wings of Interceptors. More of an battleship than carrier, White star is sufficiently armed to engage other ships of its size or siege installations. Still, for capital size warship, White star lacks armour compared to most races.
Size: 197

Orentis (Heavy Variant)
Image
Spoiler!
The ultimate frontline battleship of Ratai, rarely seen in engagement or anywhere but core fleet. These hulking ships serve no other purpose than to fight through the toughest battles where failure is no option. These ships were designed during the very last years of Ratai - Darkness war. None of the original ships ever finished before the end of war, but the design is simple enough to be produced in forgery ships even on the move - and therefore Orentis class is the only war time ship design still produced.

Simple does not mean cheap - or powerless. When first ship of this class, Orentis (from which the class name comes from) was finished, the Ratai were living through the worst time of Darkness raids, and the end of the specie seemed close. The fresh battlecarrier got to action on first day it was launched, tasked to hold jump node after rest of the fleet had escaped and do so as long as able. Practically suicide mission. Crew of Orentis did not even know where the fleet would be jumping.

It did not take long before first Darkness ships comfronted the new battlecarrier. The stories tell that Orentis single handedly held against dozen Darkness warships, although more realistic assumption would be that most of this was propably fighter craft. Indeed, the Orentis held, even succesfully rebelled three boarding attempts, and even after its controls had been compromised, continued to battle, with its guns manned by crew firing independently. By the time most of the Darkness ships were destroyed, or had been forced to retreat beyond weapons range, Orentis was heavily damaged, its hull more dark than white and half of her crew dead. 80% of her fighter craft had been destroyed, but the ship held. Every minute the ship stood there blockading the jump node, further away the Ratai fleet was and indeed it was thanks to Orentis that Ratai finally gained enough distance from their enemy not to have another contact with Darkness for over 60 years.

The ship eventually re-united with the fleet, learning that it had split to four groups in hope of increasing chances to survive. Orentis became later flagship of the Guardian fleet, which she still serves in. Today Ratai have total of 22 such ships in its fleet.

Orentis (Guardian fleet variant)
Image
Spoiler!
This is THE Orentis, the ship that started it all, the ship that held against 20 Darkness vessels (if stories are to be believed) and ensured that Ratai would gain enough distance from Darkness to survive as specie. Now serving as a Flagship of Guardian fleet, this old grandma of a warship still runs well and is able to kick some serious mechanical ass. She is armed slightly differently than the other 21 ships of same model, and has slightly increased Armour. There are no other significiant differences between this and the later models of Orentis battlecarrier.

The ship is actually somewhat weaker than the newer models when engaging capital size ships, her weapons more designed to engage vessels smaller than itself. Still, the vessel packs punch and the FF20 Interceptors it launches are no joke. She is the headquaters of Guardian fleet and never seen elsewhere nor in engagements with other species than Darkness.

Re: Ratai Armada

Post by R0ni »

With next update I will be re-balancing weaponry of Ratai ships, and also reducing variation of weapons to these six displayed in list. I will propably remove ships such as Arime - or switch their weaponry. Orentis will also loose the beam weapons and Railguns. Light autocannon will be removed, and changed to Medium. This will buff Angel's weaponry some, but to compensate, it will loose missile launch ability. Fighters will use same weapons with reduced firepower, but slightly increased fire rate. Still testing and balancing. I hope none of these are too OP.

AC 600 is super heavy autocannon for now only found in Orentis. AC 300 is standard heavy Autocannon, found in cruisers. AC 150 is Medium, found in Destroyers, Frigates and Dragonfly light cruiser. Flak cannons will be all removed and switched to PD AC40.

GIMP 2.8 - as I do for every drawing and... picture that requires editing.
Are the weapon stats okay? Nothing too powerful? Frigates will obviously recieve quite an buff, but right now they can't damage pretty much anything it seems so I guess its okay.

It is the point defence turret. Actually somewhat nerfed compared to previous ones. That could fire twice as fast. How powerfull should the missiles be? HESSM is the heaviest, but fires twice every ~third second. Ratai got no nukes so this is biggest missile in their arsenal.

Now that Anna has slapped most of us across the face, telling some nerfing is required, I don't actually have to redo my ships entirely, nor buff my cruisers to even closely reach the level of firepower some ships of same class were over here. Instead, some minor nerfing and cosmetic changes were made.

Behold the new Guardian CA

SMscreen020.png (11.29 KiB) Viewed 11533 times
Changes made:
Spoiler!
-Speed reduced to 1
-HP reduced to 600 (this is heavy cruiser)
-Turning and acceleration Reduced (forgot how much, too lazy to check.)
-Medium autocannons removed entirely. Now on their spots stand some.. sensory equipment.
-Remaining weapon values changed to match the general Ratai weapons sheat.
-Increased rate of fire of missiles.
-Decreased speed of missiles.
-Slightly increased speed of autocannon projectile (recently too many misses)
-Flaks removed.
-4x PD AC40s added into mid section of ship, to the holes seen in the hull plating.
-Overall PD / flak power nerfed slightly.
-Added several new sections, including the plating, some windows and extensions.
Combat results (against other cruiser classes)
Spoiler!
SAR:
-Looses to Typhoon. (no core damage to Typhoon. Numerous sections lost however)
-Wins to Hurricane. (Quite easily. Possibly could take on another and survive)
-Most of the time wins to Cyclone (Unless it can deliver few lucky nuke shots)

Done already for most of the basic ships. Might remove Arime and certain specials. Just too lazy with taking new screens and putting them here. Imma bleh like dat.

And Robot, I think some form of RP or ship encounter would do for Ratai to actually "recognize" and even know that PACIV exists. Of course, to make an alliance, there has to be some reason behind it. From Ratai's point of view, they require no long term alliances, because they are not planning to stay too long in the area to make much use of it. Right now Ratai have alliance - or mutual defence pact with Miora because Ratai actually have to fly through Mioran space to get somewhere. It is way easier in this case to use diplomacy, rather than try to blast its way through with quite an casualities. Ratai fleet is over 8 times larger than Mioran, but with technological level of Miora, for every blown Mioran ship, Ratai would loose several. Not to mention civilian fleet that would be at risk.

Ratai recognize no territories in sense other species do. They understand from Miora that certain areas are not be visited. And do understand that neither SAR nor Novians are planning to let through invasion fleet scale armada they have. The Alliance Ratai and Miora have are mostly based on two sections least from Ratai point of view:

1. Ratai gain access to new sector of space and can do so without retaliation from Miora, thus their journey can continue.

2. As both SAR and Novians are hostile to Mioran and Ratai, it is more beneficial to co-operate in this case. Ratai need to continue their journey and eventually have to push through one of these two sectors. Miora in other hand are in war with SAR least and possibly with Novians too. Once Ratai push through, it will weaken the enemy, thus benefit Miora. Ratai in other hand could use some firesupport from Miora to actually make it through. Both win.

Of course the alliance has number pacts and agreements that too are beneficial in their own term. Ratai can trade their technological knowledge from their archives to Miora in exchange of materials and supplies they quite dearly need.

---

Now what PACIV could offer to specie that usually finds other factions indifferent unless forced to interact with them?

Well, PACIV seek alliance with Mior, and by extension, Ratai. PACIV are also supposed to be closer to darkness than Mior or Ratai are currently, and would probably benefit from meeting with a race which has encountered the Darkness before.

Then I suppose asking Miora for alliance is the way to start then. Ratai sure can follow the example.
