This is usually what my work area looks like when building ships.

What do your work areas look like? I'm going to assume that mine is the most messy.

I find keeping loading sprites into shipmaker (or keeping them in the build area itself) just reduces the variation of sprites I use. Instead I find having a load of windows open at the side and dragging and dropping sprites onto the ship much easier.

I still don't know why you don't mirror anything. My workspace is clean, and I use the massive ini. file with all the shiny, DST, and HM sprites in it. Basically I just put something in, and if it looks good I keep it. The way I build is almost solely trial and error. I seem to be doing well, so I'm not going to make any changes.

Well doogie, that's the way I do it, but all I can build are space turds. (OnO)

... How on Earth do you build like that, Zalausai? I just... that mess would completely put me off, and having such a tiny and jumbled up selection of sections would irritate the hell out of me.

Here's how I do it. I made it a video because I was working on something and decided to record it:

Well, I do leave the little window at the side with all the sprites in it open the entire time. It has all 512 shiny sprites. That screenshot is just the shipmaker field. A large number of those sprites are changed while they are selected using the left-click over the sprite that I want them to actually be. I use this method to control the number of sections that each ship gets.

No wonder why you don't use mirroring.

It seems that I have the most haphazard construction methods ever seen by anyone here.

How do you rotate a large group of sections like in the video?

I remember using that once so i'm guessing it's Ctrl+V+Scroll

You can move a section and every section parented to it by holding Ctrl+whatever you'd normally press. You can group rotate with Ctrl+L and J, and can group-move with Ctrl+Shift+Arrow Keys. It's a handy thing.

You know what else is a handy thing? Pressing F1 brings up the manual. :P

The manual is bloated and shit. (and people never bother to read it for this reason and also because they're lazy)
