How to add depth to weapons

Post by otocar91 »

i'm trying to make battleship with cannons in betwen some of the pieces.
i want it to be: piece-weapon-piece. however, whenever i press "w" the gun
goes straight to the bottom.
how can i control it so that i can put it in betwen?

Weapons get the depthing of their parent section. So if you want the gun to be between plates A and B, you must parent it to plate C, where plate C is between A and B.

____Plate A_____

____Plate C_____ --parent-->Cannon

____Plate B_____

actually it is enough to parent it to Plate B as the weapons automatically always are over the section they are parented to.

thanks it works, although i get errors when i mirror the ship, so i have to build each side individually.

I don't know if dephtened weapons give errors. but if they do you could simply build the hull first, mirror and then put the weapons on. just a little thought because I know how heplful the mirror option can be!

Mirroring and group copying does indeed mess up not only depthing but triggers and drivers, so yes, you are going to have to build each side manually . A big tip if you're not already doing it is highlighting over pieces and presing 'h' to hide that piece, and using 'Shift+U' to unhide hidden pieces. This helps ALOT when dealing with multiple pieces depthed in the same spot

You can avoid errors by going in this order:
1. Build hull
2. Place weapons
3. Mirror
4. Depthing
5. Triggers

Unless the problem is fixed...

I disagree. Depthing should happen as you build to save you the trouble later. Mirror your hull after every other section so you get a good idea how it will look when it's done, and to check for layering errors across the centerline. Weapons should come after you finish construction, depthing, and mirroring, and they should be mirrored manually because things like links and weapon depthing do not mirror well.
