Um, aegis shields not working

When i try to make a ship and put aegis shields on it, and then try to save the ship, it says the aegis shields have no target.... problem is I can't figure out how to give them a target so that they'll work. Any help here?

Select the aegis module, hover your mouse over target section, press T.
