The Dual Duel Tourney: a round robin 2v2

Post by HalfThere »

2v2 Ship tourney

NOTE: I have just changed the due dates. middleweights are due August 3rd, with heavies and superheavies having a new deadline that will be announced. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TIME.

New Edit: Everybody, I'm counting on you to make the middleweight matches exciting. I've got two entrants already, but like some sort of ship-dependent addict, I need more! MORE! Enter, even if it's just for fun. Get your ship in ahead of time for kudos.

Thanks.

Edit: rule change, see the * in shipbuilding rules.

Alright, so what’s the deal with this tourney? Well, it’s a round-robin tourney with four weight classes (of different points): light (80 points), middle (150 points), heavy (300 points) and superheavy (500 points). However, there’s a special twist. You don’t use your points to build one ship – rather you divvy them up in any manner you desire between two that are of whatever ship class you want. 2 frigates versus a cruiser/battleship duo, or 2 battleships versus one even bigger, uglier battleship and it’s light frigate escort. Imagine the possibilities.

Format RULES
Fights will take place in a 5000 X 5000 arena, with ships starting far apart. They will play best of 3 matches. I’ll post summaries of each fight.

I’m interested in making this move quickly, so the deadlines will be staggered for each class (though you can, of course, enter in as many or as few as you desire).
-Lightweights (80 points): July 20th
-Middleweights (150 points): August 3rd
-Heavyweights (300 points): TBA
-Superheavyweights (500 points): TBA
You don’t need to sign up or anything (though you should ideally post to let me know), just submit the .shp files and a list of point allocations to me by the appropriate deadline (via PM), along with a snapshot of positioning (if you don’t give the shot, I’ll place them pretty much however makes sense to my mind).

Note: I’ll also be pitting your ships against my own, but that won’t factor into the tourney. It’ll just be a little diversion.

Edit: A few useful guidelines for turning in your ship

You can submit a new pair of ships before the deadline if you just leave the notice that you want them instead.

Two other things (again, to be addressed any time before the deadline):
Please itemize a list of of point expenditures. The format can me simple, such as:
Core HP upgrade:
Sections:
Section HP upgrade:
Speed:
Turn:
Acceleration:
Weapons/Modules:
(NOTE: please list your weapons and modules).

Second, it is advantageous for you to give me some idea, via screenshot or otherwise, of how you want your ships arrayed.

Thanks for your participation. I hope this ends up being a great tournament!

End of guidelines

Shipbuilding RULES
Light: 80 total points
Medium: 150 total points
Heavy: 300 total points
Superheavy: 500 total points

Code: Select all

Attribute--|--Battleship---|----Cruiser----|----Frigate----
Core HP | 1 point/50 | 1 points/25 | 1 point/10
Base HP | 500 | 400 | 300
Max Speed | 1 points/0.10 | 1 points/0.15 | 1 points/0.25
Accelerate | 1 points/0.01 | 1 points/0.02 | 1 points/0.05
Turning | 1 points/0.05 | 1 points/0.10 | 1 points/0.20
Sections | 1 points/2 | 1 points/1 | 2 points/1
Sec.HP Base| 200 | 150 | 100
Sec.HP Add | 1 points/250 | 1 points/200 | 1 point/150
While looking at the blank ship, set the Core’s HP to the Base HP value that appears in the column of the ship class you have chosen, and the Max Speed, Acceleration, and Turning to zero. From here you should decide how many points you plan to allocate to the basics of the ship.

You can spend as many points on these attributes and have as many sections as you can afford. As you buy sections, you should set their Custom HP to the value listed in the Sec.HP Base row so that you don’t forget to do it later. You may want to consider strategically beefing up certain sections, though in most cases it’s better to just add ablative sections meant to be lost.

All Sections must be touching the section they are parented to. No section can have it's size increased/decreased by more than 3 nudges in both directions. Section 26 can not be increased in size.. All sections must have at least half of them showing*. The Blue Circle of the core must be visible, and the Defense Platform Civilian ship and Small cores are out of bounds.

(* One in five sections may be hidden if it's part of a 'super structure, IE having multiple pieces attached to it. This Sections cannot have weapons/modules parented to them)

Keep in mind, though, that you will have a set number of points, and no battle was ever won purely by defensive measures.

As far as AI goes, any AI can be selected and any AI Range set. Keep in mind that the AI Range is the distance your ship will try to keep between its core and the enemy’s, so it really should be no farther than your shortest ranged weapon. Though weapons mounted father back than the core will have their effective range reduced.

At this point, you’ve more than likely spent around half of the points, and hopefully have some idea what you want your killing machine to wield. Yet now comes the hard part. Where and how should you mount the instruments of your will?

Should you attempt to cover all angles of attack, or trust that your ship can turn fast enough to keep the opposition in its sights? Should you invest in your active defenses, or pour all your resources into firepower?

There are a few extra rules regarding equipment, these are listed in the fourth column.

Code: Select all

=================|=============|
* There was a rule here before about weapon points multipliers and such. A closer look proved it to be a bad idea.
** You may only have 1 Deflector Shield per 3 sections, not counting your core.

Weapons and modules cannot be stacked on top of each other, they must not overlap, or at least not in shipbuilder. There should be a gap inbetween them. Weapons can not be modded. Weapon arcs may be made as small as you want, as low as 5 Degrees if you wish so. Remember this will be AI on AI, so design you ships with that in mind.

Note 2: if you feel the rules could use some tweaking, please let me know. I won’t change them for now, unless there’s a huge error, but if this goes well I may run future tourneys.+

Depends on which weight class(es) you are entering

(-class (points): deadline
-Lightweights (80 points): July 20th
-Middleweights (150 points): July 27th
-Heavyweights (300 points): August 3rd
-Superheavyweights (500 points): August 10th
Remember, those points are the TOTAL that you are allowed to spend on BOTH ships combined. If you really want to (though it somewhat violates the spirit of the tourney) you can even make one fodder ship with nothing but the core and one ship that uses all the other points - alternately, you can distribute the points evenly. It's up to you.

Great! I'm happy to hear that.

Frankly, I think everyone on the forums should take part in this. I mean, 500 points worth of ship might be hard to build, but you can do 80 or 150 for fun, no problem!

Glad to have you guys on board! Yeah, upload to the database and PM. If that's frustrating for whatever reason, just upload to a file site like rapidshare or filefront. You can post them here too, but be aware that your competition might try to spy.

I hope that the staggered nature of the tourney's deadlines aids people in learning shipbuilding, or acclimating themselves to this particular format if they already know how.

The more people in a round robin, the better. I think this will be quite exciting.

I'm debating whether to implement (starting with the middleweights) some sort of system to prevent people from making just one ship plus a dummy, as that might actually be notably advantageous in the higher weight classes due to the way movement points could be allocated.

I'll think on it.

Both ships must use the same number of points on basic stats?
