I have a few ideas about the mothership tournement:
1) It will be the enemy magnet, we should go for a slow turtleship so our escorts do the real damage.
2) Lancets are going to be near useless on their first volley(they'll track the enemy ship and Aegis is now the lancet counter.[/quote]

hey. just asked to join alpha.Think each of us should build a mothership class hull and we pick the best to build from.(sorry if i said this too early)

Yeah, I'm thinking about the same thing. We should all build our own motherships. Then we should compare them, pick the one we think will do best, modify that per the team's wishes, figure out the team strategy, rebuild the mothership and then build our escorts. That'd be the funnest way.

So, I'm thinking projectile weapons are the way to go for this tournament. PD is more expensive, aegises will be easy to bust, there will be shots all over with so many ships adding to PD confusion, beams are relatively expensive, and we might want to take into consideration the 4 point cheap rorschaches. Goslings and Gluon bolters seem cheap at only 3 a pop. I might make a pulse/gosling spam ship.

How about we get a more charismatic name than alpha...

I just joined. I'll toss in a few names

Firefly Initiative
Cassini Division
The Cartel
The Syndicate
The Arkangels
Hellswarm

I also think that our fleet should have some sort of unified color scheme. not sure what though.

I've modified it slightly since then, pulling off some of the less useful components and adding more useful ones, it should be even better now.

what are your thoughts on deflectors?

I'm going with a small, fast, powerful ship with loads of Deflectors. :D

Aegis is just not worth it IMHO when you can just spam deflectors.

Speed/Accel. 0 ships are disallowed. I do not want to see anything even remotely resembling distributive aegis armour (though nice idea). Plus, I feel that the ships in this should really be ships and not stations.

Well, that's annoying. But I don't think that design would fair verywell anyways. If you have 8 ships shooting at a stationary target, then its going to be hard for it to not die.

Okay, here are some points to debate:

1) Is it better for the mothership to get in close or is it better for the mothership to stay away?

A close in mothership has many advantages. Much of the close in weapons are cheap and you can get about 2-400 of them on a ship if you're crazy enough. 400 minings beams... need I say more? 200 Tachs anyone? However, I think that it'll just get swamped and die because it'll get flanked horribly. However, we'll be able to flank all their ships with our small ships.

A farther out mother ship would be fairly good as a bait ship. We could mount it with stupid amounts of gosslings and long range stuff. This way, it'd keep the enemy balled up and chasing it all over the map. The problam is that this behavior will probably get it trapped. However, it will last longer. The main this is that the ship would be to be fast.

I'm in favor of the latter option. However if anyone can make a survivable close range brawler, I'm sure it would do tons of damage.

2) Is it better for the mothership to be tiny or huge?

I personally think taht we should make our motherships as small as possible. Ideally, I think that our mothership should be one of our smaller ships. That way, it can get flanking shots in instead of being the main target. The Mothership, if it can be positioned in a location where the enemy is vulnerable will be able to dish out a whole fleet's worth of damage to one ship and hopefully knock enemy ships out rapidly.

I'd think tiny and close (since we can't make a station ). If it doesn't get targeted because it's too small, they won't notice they're being ripped to shreds. And for armament (for long range I'd choose gosling or missile), I'd recommend mining beams if we go beam, but if we go projectile like we should, since many prices for projectiles were upped a bit, the ones that didn't increase are even better now, making tachyon drivers/cannons look good (loads of drivers would soak up nearly all the projectiles thrown at it), and pulse cannons look awesome. In fact, pulse cannons now have well over twice the DPS/point of any other weapon. 300+ of those at short range in a close range tiny flanking MS will quite simply melt through our opposition.

In short: pulse gun > tachyon driver > gosling > other for weapons.

Things that I think are too expensive this time around/will be useless in this tournament: boosters (unless for tachyon repeaters, they're too costly), dieterings, lancets (since we now have anti-lancet aegis everywhere, ships will be dieing well before lancets would make a difference), and demeters (gravbeams + 100+ demeters = who cares).

Does anybody think the super cheap rorschaches will be useful?

And let's actually get some team spirit happening here! An easy starting step: What will the team colour scheme be? I was thinking we could have the escorts all have a relatively similar colour scheme, but have the mothership use a slightly different/more complex one. And my personal vote for colour scheme? Green/Red. :)

Deflectors stop beams, we don't need more anti-beams. I think for close in, we should go with Mbeams or Scatter Beams. Scatter Beams are more economical since they do about twice the DPS so instead of 200 sections, we only need 100 to do 400 DPS. (I'm experimenting with this)

I also think that gatling blasters are good. Tons of gattling blasters can be hard to stop due to their spread and fact that they shoot three projectiles in sucession for a blob of fire instead of a quick series of bursts.

With projectiles, if we are going to spam them, we want one with high deviation since PD get confused and shoot the ones beside the ship. Plasma, Gat Pulse, and Gat Blaster are good for this.

I think we should experiment with Tac + Driver. They have the same range. Drivers can bust Aegis on slow ships and block projectiles. Tacs have low interceptability and are hard to kill. We can conceivably mount about 100 on a ship with a few Drivers. The main problem with Tacs is that they are stopped with Aegis. Atleast they distract PD. Perhaps we should do: 50 M-Beams to kill Aegis(a few to spare), about 100 Tacs for standard ship demolition, and around 20 Drivers for a total of about 310 points.

I think our final MS solution should be something like this. We need ships that are dedicated to busting Aegis and ships that are dedicated for general ship killing. The reason I think that close range ships are bad is that enemy ships will be able to flank and fire. I guess we can just put two/three aegis shields on the back to atleast avoid getting owned by lancets.

I also think that we should go light on the lancets.

PS. I think we should find an angry shade of lavender-pink. Nothing screams owned like getting blown up by something pink. :D
