How about a Battle of The Titans Tournament. The ships would have a minimum of size, but no maximum. Their would a Combat and Aesthetics prize.

(note: this is just a sugestion don't yell at me and tell me its a stupid idea)

well... just pick some standart rules, raise the points to spend for a ship to 2000 and there you go.

Ideas:

I was thinking that you could charge for movement realistically, by charging 1 point per X max speed per section (or weapons + sections, or total hp, or any such suitable metric). Then adapting the other rules to fit, people could design their ship to be a frigate or a battleship but they could be priced using the same scheme. (e.g. if 1 point gives 2 max speed per section, a 12 section ship would need to spend 24 points to get 4 max speed, while a 30 section ship would only get 1.6 max speed for 24 points). This would need tweaking, but would allow people to choose any size of ship and still have it balanced versus others.

Also, It would be interesting to try this rule: 'Each section may only be the parent of up to 3 weapons, modules, and sections'. Designers would be forced to place weapons in more vulnerable spots (since the internal sections are likely parenting more sections than outer ones), allowing for more tactics.

Finally, my coolest idea: We could try the stereotypical ad lib "<commit a violent act> the <big scary ship name>", but have it so people can make ships that cost as many points as they want, and then let the winners be the team that wins with the least points. I've thought out a significant amount of the concerns you would need to address for this (one obvious one is that since this is a cheapest one wins event, it's much more fun the more teams there are, so teams of about 4 would be best so there are a lot of competitors.), but I don't have the time to run it.

I was just thinking...

Fighter tournament?

You could allow people to experiment not simply with different parts and weapons, but how different speed and acceleration settings affect the fighter's behavior.

You know, modding a megabeamer to do 99999999 damage for every frame also falls under the category of "free tournament ship which emphasises imba".

People are just gonna abuse it. IMO, no way this would get my support and participation.

Another tournament idea:

* Using my Motherships Tournament Ruleset, minus the rules for Motherships.
* Teams of 4.
* 150 points.
* Two stages (you can tell I like the multiple stage idea, can't you?):
First stage is hull design. At the end of this stage, you must submit an empty hull complete with HP adjustments and so forth. Cannot break the 40/60 rule. The following details of the hulls are then revealed to everyone else: picture, size class, points used.
Second stage is loadout. Based on the compositions of the other fleets you can use your remaining points to add weapons and modules to the ship.

Too complicated? Suggestions? Volunteers to actually run it?

It would be nice if we could either enter ourselves or in teams.

Here is an idea, but I just do not want to run it:

Participants are told to build a ship using the existing point system within a certain number of points to fight with a certain ship P (of course information is given in prior).
The battle is run like this: The player's ship fight one ship P. If it succeeds, add 2 ship P to fight with player's ship, then 3 ship P, and so on until player's ship get destroyed. The players having the maximum number of ships destroyed wins the tournament. If the same number of ships get destroyed the number of parts of ship P got destroyed counts.
