Just make the criteria for winning this:

If one side loses their MS and the other one has it intact and it ends up in a draw, the one with their MS wins.

Otherwise if one side has twice as many ships remaining as the enemy at the end of the battle, that side wins. Otherwise its a draw.

I'm sure our team will yield definative results. Our ship will hunt you down and kill you in 30 seconds.

Yep Master Chief if correct. Lancets are a waste against frigates or fast cruisers. How about 3000 by 3000? That seems within reason. 4000 is alittle to big if ya ask me. Why not take the middle ground, and go with something in the 3000 range instead. Gives ample room, but corners and sides will still perhaps factor in alittle.

*looks up at Anti's post*

Motherships should count as 8 points, the others as 1. Whoever has more points left should win when the time limit is up. That makes 16 points counting the mothership as 8. I would say a 20 minute limit should be in place perhaps? So each side has 16 points 8 for a mothership, and 1 for each escort. Whoever has more points left over at the end of the battle wins. If the points are even at the time limit end, then its a draw? Sounds about the most efficent way to judge who wins and loses.

Better yet, that point system allows us to distinguish between two teams with the same win/loss/draw record.

It's not a bad plan, however I would give points for destroying/crippling ships, not for having them left alive.

Code: Select all

A crippled ship is one defined to have less than half of its destructable points remaining (that is, non-speed, non-core-HP+).

Destroying a Mothership is worth 16 points, crippling it 8.
Destroying an Escort is worth 2 points, crippling it 1.
I'll consider the sandbox size increase, and do some more testing.

thx, I figured that would be easy for you to go with.

Also, and this is excellent, it helps sort out the Enemy/Ally problem. Just face each other four times, twice as each side, and then total points.

That'd be too hard to do. Just make it 1/2 sections left.

Half sections penalises ablative armour.

I think I'm capable of working it out.

I know your perfectly capable. But honestly I don't think a ship should count towards points unless its completely destroyed. Or as a comprimise, maybe it could count as destroyed if its either stripped of weapons/modules. Or if only the core remains it could also count as destroyed. But other then that, I honestly don't think that a ship should count for anything, unless it goes boom :!:

Oh and I think you messed up the first submission date on the title. It says the submission date is in august not may lol. Should read 5/8/08 ....... :D

The European date system goes dd/mm/yy

What's with all these date formats? One simple solution: 8 May 2008.

Point Beams...

The bug persists. It makes close range brawling motherships untenable.

That's gonna be a tad too small. Gives advantage to big lumbering battleships which then can trap flankers against a wall. Maybe around 4096x4096 would be better.
Given that the Mothership tourneys (9 ships) were run at 5000x5000, 18 ships constrained to 2048x2048 seems rather cramped. Also, your reason for the small dimensions being a concern about stalemates and no clear winner I think has become a moot issue now that you are working on using a point system for surviving/intact ships. Personal preference - 5000x5000.

A small sandbox hurts people that design fast mobile ships, they have their ships capabilities crippled by the maneuvering constraints imposed by the boundary limits (I am sensitive to this issue, as in the past I have usually made fast mobile ships, and have watched them get crushed because they get involved in boundary box bouncing rather than deep space fights with no artificial boundaries).

Because of the high ship number count, an opposing fleet of AI Range=1000 lancet firing ships would find some of its ships getting pushed to the boundaries (even at 5000x5000) by the other fleet's ships, cornered and destroyed. If this was a purely one on one battle, then it would be of greater concern. If the lancet ships are otherwise ineffective, then those lost ships (whatever number) assures the lancet team of a loss.

Thanks for a well reasoned argument. I've done some testing, and it seems to confirm this. 4096x4096 it is, then.
