Mar 7 - Revised ship list, started adding people's tentative final releases. Be aware that if people change these, what I post up here might not always be the most recent version.
Mar 6 - Added fleet rules. Could you please send me a .shp file with your final version? I'm running an old version of BSF (.86) so I doubt I'd be able to open most people's .sb3's. That, and I can post a link to your ship up on the main page.
2:57pm Mar 4 - fixed the mistake, sorry - I'm dumb.
Mar 4 - DUE DATE SET: Starts, 12:00am Monday, Mar 10, ends 12:01am Thursday Mar 13. PM me with your final version and a breakdown of points spent. If I need you to revise something, I'll give you until the end of Thursday to make revisions.
Feb 15 - CaptainTrek has dropped out of the tourney and rosters have been shuffled.
Feb 14 - important picture uploaded
Feb 13 - More people and more ship names. I'll try to make sure the links to people's designs lead were they should, but you guys are too fast for me

Feb 12 - Added new ships, spots all filled. If I get enough I'll make a fourth section. Added important note on the bottom, a hint on the MS, and more due-date info, and decided to change the title every time I update the main page.
Feb 11 - Adding more people, two spots in gamma remain. Comodore111's ship posted.
Feb 10 - posted, edited section rules
Intro
Greetings ladies and gentlemen, our worst nightmare has, once again, come true. The aliens are once again constructing a mothership to exterminate humanity, and in teams of 8, you must construct a ship each to combat it. At the moment, the only intel we have is a single picture, snagged by an expeditionary force lead by the, now sadly destroyed, Prise de Fer MKIV. We caught the mothership as it was finishing construction in an asteroid belt near planet JHX2486. We know that it is surrounded by scaffolding in this picture, but we cannot discern which parts are attached to the ship, and what is under sections of scaffolding.

You will not, unless your team opts to, have to face the mothership AND its scaffolding. [As it stands, I've yet to think of any benefit your team would receive if you choose to do so - maybe you can elect to take one of the alternate ships? We can vote on this later.]
Your ships will be 100 point ships.
Point Values
Code: Select all
The first task before you is to choose a ship class. This will affect all aspects of your ship, due to the variance in cost between the classes. These classes are Battleship, Cruiser, & Frigate.
Once you have chosen your ship’s class, it will dictate how you spend the points allotted for the tournament. Each faucet of the ship has a cost associated which is based upon the ships size.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Attribute--|--Battleship---|----Cruiser----|----Frigate----
Core HP | 1 point/50 | 1 points/25 | 1 point/10
Base HP | 500 | 400 | 300
Max Speed | 1 points/0.10 | 1 points/0.15 | 1 points/0.20
Accelerate | 1 points/0.01 | 1 points/0.02 | 1 points/0.05
Turning | 1 points/0.08 | 1 points/0.14 | 1 points/0.20
Sections | 1 points/2 | 1 points/1 | 2 points/1
Sec.HP Base| 200 | 150 | 100
Sec.HP Add | 1 points/250 | 1 points/200 | 1 point/150
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While looking at the blank ship, set the Core’s HP to the Base HP value that appears in the column of the ship class you have chosen, and the Max Speed, Acceleration, and Turning to zero. From here you should decide how many points you plan to allocate to the basics of the ship.
You can spend as many points on these attributes and have as many sections as you can afford. As you buy sections, you should set their Custom HP to the value listed in the Sec.HP Base row so that you don’t forget to do it later. You may want to consider strategically beefing up certain sections, though in most cases it’s better to just add ablative sections meant to be lost.
Keep in mind, though, that you will have a set number of points, and no battle was ever won purely by defensive measures.
As far as AI goes, any AI can be selected and any AI Range set. Keep in mind that the AI Range is the distance your ship will try to keep between its core and the enemy’s, so it really should be no farther than your shortest ranged weapon. Though weapons mounted father back than the core will have their effective range reduced.
At this point, you’ve more than likely spent around half of the points, and hopefully have some idea what you want your killing machine to wield. Yet now comes the hard part. Where and how should you mount the instruments of your will?
Should you attempt to cover all angles of attack, or trust that your ship can turn fast enough to keep the opposition in its sights? Should you invest in your active defenses, or pour all your resources into firepower?

* You may only have 1 Aegis Deflector per 6 sections, not counting your core. They cannot be on the section they’re guarding. The ship will be ruled on. They may not be used with standard Deflector Shields.
** You may only have 1 Deflector Shield per 3 sections, not counting your core. They may not be used with Aegis Deflectors.
Hopefully you’ve been able to fit all the kit you want onto your ship, and it is now ready to convert a few foes to a quickly expanding field of debris. At this point, if you’re happy with her, you should take a screenshot, upload the files, and submit her to the tournament.
Good luck, and good fight!
Parenting
All ships must have logical parenting, modules must sit on the sections they are attached to and parented sections must touch.
While stacking sections and weapons is fine, it must be within reason. A section cannot be completely covered by another section, and a weapon\module cannot be completely covered by another weapon\module. However, weapon\modules may completely cover a section.
Ship cores must be default. Generally, around only 25% of a section may be covered, and 50% of a module. Basically, if you think there's a problem, there probably is.
Shields
Deflectors are restricted to one per three sections and Aegis are restricted to one per six sections. Aegis'd sections may not cover more than 90 degrees when measured from the core. A ship may not have both deflectors and aegis.
An Aegis Shield may not completely cover one side of attack.
*important* Aegis'd sections must have at least 10 degrees of space when measured from the core, between them.
Weapons and Modules
Each section may parent at most two modules/weapons. All weapons must use their original arc. That is, weapons may no longer be expanded to 180 degrees in this tournament. No attributes may be changed for weapons or modules.
Sections
Sections can be resized a maximum of 3 times, but for every expansion, it must be shrunk in the opposite direction. So, you can expand the length but you will have to shrink the width for every expansion. If you plan on shrinking something, you don't have to expand it. Aegis'd sections may NOT be modified.

Edit - 9:38am, 12/02/08: As of this moment, for any further additions to the tournament, you MUST post in this thread. I can't track you down in the custom ship forums, or on each team's threads. And on that note, any further additions will be added in their order posted on this thread, so if you post elsewhere, you will be added in the order I see it and/or after the next most recent entry on this thread. I'm sorry to have to do this, but I'm really getting bogged down digging through threads and I want to be fair to as many people as possible. Oh, and on that note, if you're posting your ship in a thread on the custom ships board, could you post me a link to it here, so that I can add it to the list? It helps me keep tabs on everything, and helps other participants. Thanks for your help, everyone.

Oh, and a little hint, because I don't have a video for you folks yet/if ever. This mothership isn't as fast as the first one, though it will still likely be faster than most of your ships.
edit: 9:56/12/2/08 - Exethalion brought up a very good point, and I've decided to have a team delta, rather than alternates. In the event that there isn't enough people to fill team delta, they may elect to use ships from the other teams as surrogate members. Does that sound fair to everyone?
edit: 3:04/12/2/08 - You may !either! parent up to two items to the core, or cover it completely. Basically, if you can fit'em, go for it. However, you aren't allowed to cover your core, put pieces where it would be, and then parent them to the core. You could cover 1/2 of your core, then put pieces on the uncovered half.
edit: 8:30/12/2/08 - Just in case there's some confusion with the rules about the gap between aegis'd sections, here's a picture of the prise de fer MK3 from back in the day, and you can see how it has the gap that I want. I just don't want your ships to have a side that's completely invulnerable. Also, bear in mind, I didn't measure if this is 15 degrees or not, but I'm not going to hold you guys to the letter. If you can test it, then good karma to you. If I look at it and think you're trying to pull a fast one, then... well, either defend your ship or fix it. huzah!

edit: 10:04/13/2 - Just a couple things I want to add. In regards to organizing your fleet, I'm still in the process of deciding how to do it, either you send me a screenshot with how you'd like it organized, or make an encounter. I'm leaning towards the former, but we can discuss that. One rule I will make now, is that your fleet cannot fully surround the mothership. At best, you may surround the front half of the mothership (ie. 180 degrees around the front).
Second, in regards to having an aegis'd section at the very front of a ship that's marginally smaller than a large section behind it, I'll have to deal with it on a case-by-case basis, but there is a 98% chance I will say no, if only because by letting one entry through, I suspect I'll have to deal with a large amount of conflicts over it. Basically, it falls along the lines of the 'if it seems wrong, it probably is rule'. I'm sorry to have to do this, because I really hate making people redo their designs, but this would really compromise the balance of the tourney. Thank you for your cooperation.
Summary:
1. Format of entering your formation is up in the air, leave your thoughts on this thread.
2. Your fleet may surround, at most, 180 degrees of the mothership, measured from the front.
3. Even if you have sections larger than your front aegis section, I very likely won't accept it unless there is a significant difference. I'm sorry, but I can't quantify this at the moment. It will be decided on a case-by-case basis, but the chance is infinitesimal.
Edit:
And in case you try to circumvent this, each section placed directly around (ie. adjecent and directly above or below) a shield blocking one side of an attack must have 10% of your total weapon and module point value, or be supporting the aegis'd section. An Aegis Shield [or shields] may not completely cover one side of attack
Though, because I feel really bad having to do this, I'll give you guys a hint - Team Delta has the best idea about the shape of the mothership.
Oh, and hey, in case anyone's interested, my timezone is Mountain, so that might help you make sense of my update times

edit: 6:13pm/14/02 - because there's been confusion over the "have a space between aegis sections" here's an example of what I'm looking for, and roughly the size I'd like. I know I've okay-ed a lot of people's ships and I'm not going to go back on it, so it's up to you guys if you change it or not, but this is ideally what I'd like. Note: assume that all these sections are aegis'd, and realize that they violate the 90 degree rule.

edit: 9:40pm/15/02 - CaptainTrek has dropped out of the tournament, iand I have tentatively moved Natch into his place due to requests from team beta, and his previous desires to switch teams.
edit 12:46 Mar 06 - Battlefield will be 5000x5000. You may order your ships in any formation on your half of the battlefield. I reserve the right to place my mothership where I please on my half in response to your choices. Please post either a screenshoot or a clear diagram on your respective site as to your formation. If your team cannot win against the mothership, I will randomly select two reserves, or use the reserves of your choosing. If you do not specify where you would like them (and please tell me which ship on your design is a reserve), I will place them in a position that I believe best aids your team (read: I'm not gonna cheat you - while I want to see my mothership crush you to dust, I also want earth to prevail
