Other System Types?
Obviously not every single system is going to have a habitable planet. In fact, lanespace does not necessarily link only systems, it can also link to bubbles or sectors in deep space.
Differing Sector types would be denoted by a fixed colour in place of the ownership, or possibly even a different shape.
Ideas:
Deep Space Sector
For some reason, this sector of the lanespace grid is completely empty. There's absolutely nothing here, apart from ships or miscellaneous spaceborne objects like comets or asteroids. Certain structures can be built here.
Asteroid/Debris Field
The center of this sector is home to a massive asteroid cluster or is a ship graveyard. Mining or Salvage ships can harvest resources from this sector at a slow but steady rate. Never depletes, but income fluctuates unpredictably.
Base income is determined by Field Density; Low, Medium or High.
Tranquil Nebula Sector
A serene nebula sector, nothing to really write home about, but it looks pretty. Remotely built structures or some kind of civilian ship could offer cruises, providing a small morale bonus to the owner's planets. Visibility is fairly clear, and sensors are relatively unimpeded.
Murky Nebula Sector
This nebula sector's gas clouds are so dense that you can barely see your hand in front of your face if you're doing engaging in extra-vehicular activity. Whilst the sector itself does not pose a threat, ships are basically blind as sensors are almost useless.
Stormy Nebula Sector
A dangerous sector wracked by massive electrical discharges and littered with pockets of explosive, radioactive or otherwise hazardous gases. Ships in this sector may take damage every turn, and sensor effectiveness is greatly reduced.
Brown Dwarf/Young Star/White Dwarf Sector
This sector is host to a failed, forming or ancient star which is surrounded by a vast accretion disc consisting of asteroids and possibly newly-forming planets. Like an Asteroid/Debris Field, this sector can be remotely harvested. Sensors may or may not be impeded.
Subspace Intrusion
This sector is home to a rip in the fabric of space - a massive two-way rift leading into subspace. Subspace is the home of not only pirates and miscreants, but also ancient and incomprehensible horrors. The rift itself is largely harmless, but it allows those same horrors free access into the same sector - and if they dare, adjacent sectors. Rifts should be watched carefully; emissions can herald the coming of something terrifying... or be a false alarm.

Black Hole Sector
An extremely dangerous sector inhabited by a single black hole. Can only be traveled by via the use of advanced engines. If attempted to travel by before obtaining such technology, any ship going into the sector will be destroyed. When some advanced engines are obtained, those chances decrease to 75%. Still, 3 out of 4 times the ships will be destroyed. On the plus side, the gravitational forces on the sector have created fast single-crossing anomalies that can take to many sectors rapidly. However, a ship that goes through one of these can't go back through the same anomaly.

Dark Matter Bubble
A large nebula like cloud of Dark Matter. The Dark Matter itself spoofs normal detection systems and requires specialised electronics to operate properly. However the Dark Matter is a rare and valuable resource and can be mined by gas miners and such, providing a huge boost to income. Might be as valuable as a dense asteroid Field, or more valuable.

Rogue Planet
This planet, having lost it's orbit with a star for reasons unknown, is traveling on a slow path out of the galaxy. It won't leave this sector in our lifetime, so we can jump to it easily, and it will remain in somewhat the same spot.
However, this means that just this planet will be here. It has no satellites, nor any sun.

I'm guessing this would be like one of those planets with kilometers of ice between the surface of the ice and the surface of the planet, right? Y'know, since if its that far away then heat would be minimal, it would be dark, and the atmosphere might as well have frozen.inteuniso wrote:Rogue Planet

No one usually enters these areas, because of the countless still active mines and other weaponry. Taking out the hazards could take months, but the advanced tech in these sectors usually attracts a lot of shady types like pirates and people who want to try their luck. Any planets in the sector are usually unfit for colonization.

We've got this already - it's called the Debris Field. Only difference is, Debris Fields have no useful techs, and I see no need for that to change. Tech can be salvaged during battle anyway, with appropriate salvager ships.AlphaDetisMegas wrote:Former Warzone

Actually, if it retained a large moon, tidal heating and decay of radioactive elements would probably keep it warm for some time, given that it also has a substantial atmosphere. It's final fate would likely be a ball of frozen rock, but for planets that were "more recently" ejected from their system, it would be possible for them to be habitable. Space is cold, but it's also a vacuum, and vacuums are terrible heat conductors.Silverware wrote:No sun means no heat so yes. If it had a liquid, or gaseous atmosphere near when warm.
But many wouldn't so it would be unlikely that it would have ice, but it would almost cirtainly have lost its inner heat to the cold of space, or just have a reall really hard and thick crust.

If they did retain their Core heat then yes, they would be warm under the surface, but the surface would still be hovering around 20 or 30 Kelvin, However if you were to create a dense atmosphere you might just be able to keep enough heat in to support carbon based life. Humans would likely have to live in Bio-domes of some sort but if you provided high energy lighting to the surface powered by geothermal energy you could grow various sorts of plants on the surface and eventually grow a small ecosystem. Basically terraforming it, but without the high doses of radiation from nearby stars you would slow mutation down hugely, and would also provide a place for humans to survive upon, at least until the Core temperature dropped too low.

I think each anomalous occurrence type that provides research bonuses should only apply them to curtain fields, this would mean that some areas would be fought over heavily in order to control the bonuses, if they are a major help.
On that note.

This section of Lane-space has been broken, from some, presumably violent, event leaving it a strange mix of Lane-space and real space. This is a scientific marvel, giving large bonuses to research on Lane-space when a research station is built here. However these fractures are unstable and don't last forever.
Surviving around 3d4 turns before reforming into standard Lane-space, any ships or structures in the Lane-space fracture when it reforms are subject to the reforming of Lane-space and on a roll of a d6 are either destroyed or ejected in either direction.
1 : ejected to side "one" of the lane
2 : ejected to side "two" of the lane
3+: Destroyed
Sides are determined at random but do not change between rolls for the different ships or structures.
