Carpe Universum is a SHMUP game that I'm doing on the side.

What's unique about Carpe Universum is the combo system. It combines the combo system of fighting games with a SHMUP. A sample of the moves are demonstrated in the video.

Also, you will be able to roll to dodge bullets. This means that you will never be hemmed in by bullets, if you die, you'll only ever have yourself to blame.

My objective with this game is to build a very intense shooter by encouraging aggressive play through the way the gun works and with the shield charge. The gun only fires if there's less than a certain number of shots already in existence, so if you approach really close to a target it fires a whole lot faster. The shield charge destroys bullets and enemies in your way but retreating from that position is much slower.

However, you can roll to the left and right at any time and you are completely invulnerable while rolling. This allows you to stay mobile.

The aim of all this is to encourage very dynamic play where the player roams around the entire play field rather than just sticking to the bottom of the screen all the time.

I'll put the game up once it's actually playable.

Game looks neat and the play strategy concept sounds like something new and original.

yes! I like that! the invulnerable roll reminds me of starfox. however I hope you get it to get very tricky with the time and what about highscores and bosses? will there be such things? I'd love to see those.

oh from tzhe video it also looks like xou don't actually aim on your own. do you control the shooting (without aim) and the flying?

*drools* Finally. A SHMUP where you you aren't automatically dead if there are a gazillion enemies on screen. I can't wait!

Ahhh... I love the occasional SHMUP on the side of my usual RTS and TBS fare. Going for making a gem or making a slightly less simplistic shooter?

I've played through the demo a few times, and I gotta say it's one of the better shmups I've played. Add more enemy variety and more levels and you have yourself a kick ass game.

I love the street fighter style combo system too, really unique.

This is a lot to ask this early on I know, but do you think we will ever see a co-op mode for this game? SHMUP's are great games to play with a friend.

Is there a collected list of instructions? It's hard to read them when they pop on screen when you're trying to play the game, and Help is decidedly unHelpful.
