Where are they now?

Post by Deltaflyer »

In typing up my response to the thread Anna made in BF General, a thought occurred. It'd be nice to see how people from the community, friends we no longer talk to, creatives we no longer critique, have gotten on in the intervening years. I'll start:

I'm in the process of finishing an undergraduate degree in Politics as a mature student. There has been various peaks and pitfalls along my academic journey - discovering a love for Rugby League, developing depression (henceforward referred colloquially as 'The big sad') but then also meeting my incredible partner. I'm reasonably good at the academia, and I'm on course for a very strong degree despite the things I've had to fight through. Moving on from professional life into gaming, I've gotten rather interested in Esports! I'm a volunteer trainee stream producer for Esports Wales, I regularly perform freelance casts for Rainbow Six: Siege, Rocket League and now Valorant tournaments and it's all rather exciting! I started my universities Esports organisation, and our Rocket League team under my management placed top 4 domestically, top 8 in Europe and became the first S-tier EU University team to beat an S-tier NA university team in organised competition ever. All in our first season, to boot! Things like this have helped me move on from The Big Sad, and I'd be excited to hear if any other community members are involved in the Esports boom!

All in all, I echo Anna's sentiment in the aforementioned thread that I hope you're all safe and well.

Sure, why not.

The last active days of these forums was my last year of high school, some 8 years ago. College life was interesting, and saw some hilarious ups and downs mostly revolving around a failed engagement. Ended up graduating (over here in the U.S.) with a B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science with some interest in a Master's degree. Never really followed through with that and the job search was a bit rough. Last year I decided I like wilderness, which I do, and started hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. It almost killed me several times due to a rather severe weather year but I'm still here yay.

Recently, I've been hired as part of a marketing firm where I am now the second in command in the business - being groomed to take over my own branch would should happen shortly after Covid dies down.

As for games, I was never as big into it as the rest of ya'll. My love has always been with film and now TV, which is partly why I liked building ships because I would do it in front of the TV during my down time on weeknights.

Still being introverted and happy, as far as my sarcastic ass goes. I'm 25 now, and seeing how I wrote on forums for my teenage years makes me cringe to no end but I made pretty spaceships.

Obviously not working at the moment because of the global pandemic and now massive civil rights riots that started in my city (yes I live in Minneapolis, and yes I have been in a lot of the protests). Still though lots of boredom, so I might make a ship or two or ten for the hell of it.

Also I'm on Steam and I own a Switch if any of ya'll wanna add me.

No way, I went for Politics and IR. I’m currently in the tail end of completing my dissertation on the events leading up to the annexation of Crimea and ongoing conflict in the Donbas, some very interesting stuff. If you’re interested have a look at some of John Mearschimer’s work. It influenced me heavily in conceptualising my argument when I first began. Small world! I echo completely the feeling of looking back at past posts and cringing heavily at my mannerisms, attitude and the like.

Hope you’re safe and that mate. I won’t be joining any physical protests on account of isolating and moving house next weekend, as much as I would like to show my support in that way. I’m actually (hopefully) taking part in a charity stream over the weekend showcasing some Rocket League talent raising money for a fund that distributes funds to a number of groups involved in the Black Lives Matter movement, so still trying to do my part!

I’m on the Wyrdysm steam group as Deltabacon (That nickname that I think Starstruck gave me really hit a chord with me and became my online moniker) and you’re more than free to add me, or I’ll add you when I next sit at my computer.

Man, it's been quite a while, hasn't it? Since then, I've finished my National Service and gone into Uni, and am now starting my last year of my environmental studies degree and starting my big research project and thesis. Still very much interested in going into science full-time, although I'll admit my path hasn't always been clear. Gaming wise, I've gone back into Terraria with the 1.4 update, and have also been messing about with Starsector as well now I have more time.
Looking back on everything, yeah there's so much I wish I'd done differently looking back. The forums were pretty much my first real time socializing on the internet, and it's been quite the experience.

Haha wow it feels weird to look at this thread and see all of you talking about the amazing things you've done with your lives.

I'm uh, a housewife, I guess!

I live with my non-binary partner Effy, keep the house clean, do chores, and generally try to stay on top of my mental health, which is about the best I can do lately when struggling with fascism rising around the world as a transgender lesbian with a lot of mental health issues.

Oh and I guess I play a lot of video games. Tons of Terraria 1.4 lately!

Whilst I know none of us would be your first choice - I'm readily available to anyone who needs to talk, chat shite, vent, or share silence with if it helps with mental health issues. It took me a long time to realise that a lot of people are actually happy and ready to help with regards to craic like that. Wishing you well! Also, whilst I never engaged with the Terraria hype, I got very heavily into ECO for a time. It's similar, in 3D and is has quite beautiful graphics for a voxel-based game. It's less expansive and perhaps a little more railroaded in terms of game direction as Terraria - there is no physical combat but if you're more into the creative side of it you may find it enjoyable!

Side note: Anna - I'm involved in another charity stream for the BLM movement at the weekend and I was wondering if (dead as it is) this forum would be an appropriate place to plug it, as inactive as it is?

God. The nostalgia. I missed this place, and I'm quite a bit happy to see people hanging out here again. This may or may not be a true revival of the forum, but I'm happy nonetheless.

I remember being an annoying little shit on here and on the IRC. A lot's happened between then and now. A lot of it I don't really want to talk about. I did get a job as a GIS specialist and technical writer for a consultancy that specializes in various forms of land use planning.

I was getting through Uni though, and was about halfway through the semester when CoVID hit and canceled classes for everyone.

In my free time, though? I've been working on my 3D modeling stuff. Here's some of the stuff I've been doing, as a shameless plug:

Hell yes. Black Lives Matter. I dunno how many people will see the plug, but I know at least I will and I want to be able to support that stream if nothing else!

Hey Bien! Damn, looks like you're doing well in life. :) I was a real cunt to you in the past when you were probably just... you know, a kid acting like a kid, and I'd like to apologise for that. It was shitty and I'm sorry. Glad to see things are looking good for you, and that modelling work of yours is real nice!

I'm down to see that stream also, Deltaflyer.

Thanks! Things could be better where I am, but they could be worse. But that's the same case for a lot of places right now, I figure. I'm glad to see that you're doing well, though! :)

I accept your apology, and I apologize also for my behavior. A lot of it was just me being a kid, but I was also in a bad place at the time and I think the worst of my behavior stemmed from that... I'm still trying to make sense of those times. What I'm trying to say is that I don't hold any of it against you, and that I did (and still do) look up to you. In a weird way, this forum did help me mature.

On another note, do you think a "BSF reunion" Discord would be a good idea?

I made a Discord server. I'm willing to hand it off to someone better than I am.

It's funny; I've played games with so many people over the years, some on a daily basis, but rarely learned anything about them. This forum especially you see a lot of personality displayed but most of the life details are imagined. Of course there were many titans from the early days of the forum who are long gone but it's still strangely satisfying to know ya'll are still out there as real people.

Doogie: Grats on doing the PCT. I'm jealous and impressed!

Delta: I'm with ya on the protests. There have been a lot in San Jose, some violent but most civil. Hard to tell which one I'd be getting into though so between that and work I've stayed away. Good luck with the house-move!

Anna: No shame in being a home-maker! It's a terrifying time so I hope you've found a measure of peace.

Bien: Bad timing for your classes. Your modeling is impressive though! I adore the Sirentide-class.

I completed college, gawd, a long time ago; with several degrees in areas which are now entirely useless to me. Pro-tip: Don't pursue your passions as a career; pursue the career which allows you to enjoy your passions... I work as a project manager and jack of all trades at a small start-up, using a variety of machines including vacuforms, lasers, and other CNCs. Chaos on a level you cannot know but keeps me entertained. Just got myself a resin 3d printer for my birthday so I've been working on recreating nostalgic ships including some from BSF. I don't really play video games much for fun anymore but spend way too much time in Space Engineers since it is great for modeling ships. My daughter has been getting interested in Minecraft though so may fall down that rabbit-hole again...I've been working during the virus and my girlfriend and daughter are in another state with family for the next few weeks so figured this was a good time to lurk.

I feel like I'm about to shrivel up and go old and grey because the dates are telling me it's been 10 whole fucking years since I last posted here. I was a little shocked that I was still able to remember my old login details. I don't know if there's something in Earth's magnetic field triggering mass episodes of nostalgia or if it's just coincidence that I was drawn back here just within a couple of months since everyone else in here was as well, but regardless, here I am I guess. I don't know if anyone remembers me but I definitely remember the people who've posted in this thread so far, even if it's all pretty hazy, and I'm glad to see that everyone's trucking on and doing okay, or at least as well as we all can in hell year. I'm looking back on my post history and cringing a bit but ultimately I remember these forums and BSF pretty fondly, this was definitely a place that inspired a bit of a creative stripe in me that I think has sadly atrophied a lot in the intervening years.

As for what I've been up to, not too much to say. I got really into boxing and took it up as a hobby, and also not long after I left here the obsession I had for starships kind of morphed into an obsession for Gundam and various other kind of mecha (I saw in my post history here that I used to hate anime and now that couldn't be further from the truth) Got my English lit degree from uni and then a postgrad law degree but struggled with the solicitor's practice qualification, picked up a job in Bahrain doing paralegal work that paid well enough for the last few years and kept me busy, but now it looks like the coof has torpedoed that and I've been out of work since February. I've got money saved up so I'm doing alright but you can only stay sat on your arse playing Doom wads so long before you start to go nuts. Now I'm thinking of going back to get that solicitor's qualification and hopefully building a more successful career off the back of it, and in the meantime maybe kick that creative part of my brain in its lazy arse and get it back to work, mostly with writing but maybe firing up the BSF shipbuilder for old time's sakes as well. I've not used Discord a great deal and it's been a good year a two since the last time I tried it, but I'd definitely be interested in dropping by and catching up if that's alright with the rest of you.
