The problem with adding mods is they wouldn't be able to delete the actual accounts of the spambots; only admins can do that and you'll excuse me if I don't exactly trust the majority of you with the keys to the admin panel simply because it's far too easy to screw something up big-time.
Main reason for deleting them is... well, personally, I don't like having the 'dead' accounts artificially inflating the usercount. That's pretty much it.
