TES3: Morrowind
Without a doubt, on this game I have racked up more playing and modding hours than all others put together, including XBOX, PS1/2, N64, GBA, Wii etc.
If you like your offline PC RPGs, there is no reason why you'd be without TES3: Morrowind. It can be found in any electrical shop for a fiver over here. Push the boat out and buy the Game of the year edition for a couple of quid extra, and as long as you can get over the poor graphics, then welcome to hundreds of hours of wasted time.
Not only is the actual game huge - A land mass around 4 square miles in real terms, where EVERY door, building, sea, valley, cave etc you see can be explored, hundreds of NPCs, countless quests and tasks and huge cities - The modability and modding comunity is the best I've ever known. There are thousands, if not more, of mods for the game ranging from simple weapon tweaks, to city expansions to whole new landmasses. If you come across anything that you arean't happy about in the game, chances are there's a mod to fix it. Or make one yourself. There's no XML or DAT editing here. My dead fish could mod for this game. Every CD comes with 'The elder scrolls construction set, which, though a little buggy, is really easy to get used to. To build entire cities it's literally a case of dragging and dropping the buildings into place, and a little position and rotation fine-tuning. The game developers developed the game theirselves using this utility.
It's like marmite in a way. LOve it or hate it. If you like Oblivion, then Morrowind isn't much of a step back. In fact, hardened TES3 modders and players like me thouroghly think that the sequel is hard slap in the face for Morroiwnd. The new fancy graphics and technology really don't do the original justice. Just go for it, and tell me what you think.
Surely there's someone out there who's played it? Anyone?

Well, It was made 4 years after, made for comps many times more powerful with all the latest graphics innvoations, so most people would say that. But overall I feel that OB is quite a shallow game. Strip away all the fancy exterior and there's not much gameplay left. In comparison, MW has more immersion than anything else I know. It's not as if OB is less immersive than minesweeper, but just that there is something extra in TES3, that makes me at least, keep coming back to it.oblivion is infinitely superior to morrowind
But of course everyone is entitled to opinion. I;m sure Anarki's statement wasn't baseless Cerebrus. If TES3 isn't for you, that's fine.
Agreed, Oblivion is good but it lacks that special something that made morrowind great. If only the two could be combined.....Exethalion wrote:Well, It was made 4 years after, made for comps many times more powerful with all the latest graphics innvoations, so most people would say that. I was utterly immensed in morrowind, even after having "completed" the main story many, many times.
Oblivion, on the other hand, just felt like a hack 'n slash in 3d with some magical items and flashy particle effects.

Eh, I'd say that to each their own. Oblivion, correct me if I'm wrong, is slightly easier to mod scripts (and you can cast spells with weapons!), but Morrowind is just more... Morrowindish.

Morrowind was deliberately made easy to mod since it was a roleplaying game and the developers wanted an immersive and persistant gameNormandy wrote:Eh, I'd say that to each their own. Oblivion, correct me if I'm wrong, is slightly easier to mod scripts (and you can cast spells with weapons!)

Oblivion was deliberately made DIFFICULT AS HELL to mod to greater depths since the developers wanted to make money by selling their own mods at fifteen poxy quid a peice.

Morrowind is made for the more immersive experience, it's harder to "get into", has extensive amounts of conflicting quests and roleplaying options, and you can't "Do eerything with one character."
Oblivion is marketed at the more casual gamer. It's easy to do everything, there's less there to confuse you.
I prefer Morrowind in all apsects except the combat system, and naturally the graphics, but even then, there's texture replacers and etc.

There is some combat system replacers, but they're very fragile. Oblivion's is better, but one perhaps like KOTOR's might have worked. Half turn based and half free action.TormakSaber wrote: I prefer Morrowind in all apsects except the combat system, and naturally the graphics, but even then, there's texture replacers and etc.

Turn based combat in morrowind would defeat the entire point of the genre.

It's just that running around Bitter Coast continuously pressing the left mouse button to kill all the cliff racers in existence until they respawn can get annoying. The ranges of weapons in MW are seriously bugged. And the choice of just 3 attack types makes combat as a whole limited. Slightly turn based combat as in KOTOR (Not like FF or anything) would expand the combat potential while keeping the sandbox feel.

Not sure what you mean here - The weapon ranges are not bugged, you just need to take into account that melee range doesn't = touching it and rubbing faces.Exethalion wrote:It's just that running around Bitter Coast continuously pressing the left mouse button to kill all the cliff racers in existence until they respawn can get annoying. Also - 4 Attack types in Morrowind - Standard, Overhead, Slash, Thrust - there are combat mods, and there are only 4 attack types in obliv - standard, power attack, forward/backward power attack and strafe power attack.
EDIT:
Cliff Racers are basically a meme/injoke, but only for the elite few gamers who got really into morrowind. Cliff racer extinction mods abound.
