And I support this system, with the single change of Sergeant to Corporal.
Course, I suppose that Sergeant is, too... <_<

Master Chief Petty Officer is even worse, because it evokes memories of Halo in addition to sounding silly.

Guess what. Their actual navy ranks. Bring it up with them if you want. Otherwise you'll have to deal with a army/navy hybred.Lord-General Thunder wrote:Petty Officer sounds sillly.Lizzie wrote:They both are. If you want navy. Both Corporal and Sergeant are army ranks, but Corporal, IMO, sounds more Navy-like than Sergeant.

I was short 1 rank from ripping them from Windows Pinball, so I just threw in sergeant. I think Junior Lieutenant/Lieutenant, Junior Grade would work fine. Corporal, maybe, so long as no one notices that it's an army rank.

Petty Officer does sound a bit silly, I don't mind saying as I was (briefly) in the Navy myself.
Some alternatives... Junior Lieutenant, Watch Officer, Warrant Officer?

Watch Officer sounds fairly distinct from the others but in keeping with the general feel of the rest of the list.Venator wrote:Petty Officer does sound a bit silly, I don't mind saying as I was (briefly) in the Navy myself.

It sounds like a rank that would be given fairly sweeping authority, so in this context I'm defining it as an officer with authority over a single starship or one of its aspects (i.e. Sensors, Weapons, Engineering, etc.)
Additionally, I'm replacing Sub-Lieutenant with Specialist. Think of it as an equivalent to Midshipman First Class.
I also added three new ranks; Marshal of the Navy, Lord-Marshal of the Navy, and Master of the Navy. Marshal of the Navy would be the default title for a forum moderator. Lord-Marshal of the Navy would be the default title for a global moderator. Master of the Navy would be the default title for a forum administrator.
So it'd be like this;
- Midshipman
- Specialist
- Lieutenant
- Watch Officer
- Squadron Captain
- Group Commander
- Star Commodore
- Vice-Marshal
- Star Marshal
- Marshal of the Star Fleet
- Lord-Marshal of the Star Fleet
- Marshal of the Navy
- Lord-Marshal of the Navy
- Master of the Navy
