Hm, I don't knwo what to add, but I'm willign to debate the classification of "Escort" as a specific name modifier.

There are Destroyer Escorts, and then there are Escort Destroyers, Escort Frigates, etc.
It can be a role (ie. EF76 Nebulon-B Escort Frigate), the same as Assault, Stealth, etc.

I like to use Escort ______ a lot for ships specifically designed for primarily escort roles.

Superdreadnought IS a used designation, back in the inter-war period, It replaced dreadnoughts, and was replaced by line battleships. Any other 'super' usage is crap, and so is 'ultra'.

@Exethalion:
Well yes, but I don't want people posting something akin to Anarki, except they'd be posting it in seriousness.

@Droid:

I would suggest to keep the names for specific classes of wind-powered ships (those that used sails and rigs as a primary power source) in their own list.

I'm aware that the age of sail was responsible for the the majority of current ship names, but only vague ones (destroyer, frigate etc) were carried over consistently into the steam power age and on while the rest were dropped unceremoniously.

For example, I would consider these sailing ship names:

Code: Select all

Brig
Brigandine
Clipper
Corsair
Cutter
Galliot (Gally)
Galleon
Brig
Ketch
Longship
Lugger
Norfolk Wherry
Schooner
Sloop
Bonus points for people who make ships that traveled on the currents of solar winds or something just as fancy.

Well, remember that I don't want these lists to get too bloated.

But what I need right now are not-so-generic generic class names for cargo carriers and aircraft (spacecraft?) carriers.

Please refrain from submitting:
Wikipedia pages. I've been there, and selected the ones I think make sense.
Anything that simply adds another word (e.g. Supertanker) or phrase to an existing name.
Giant lists
Multi-word names
=.=

I appreciate the help, but it's not helping.

It wouldn't be a submarine then. Not to mention you'd have to really fuck around with the horribly abused concept of subspace, which I've always found absurd in the first place.

For List 5 (Stellar Constructions), I would suggest adding "Dyson Sphere".
