I'd guess lots of low opacity brushing and layering them on eachother to get the gradient look.

Thanks guys.
I'm using a Wacom Graphire tablet. Took some time to get the planet right... Just a lot of brushing, blur and smudge.

I have some WIP pics here.

Also, another thing i'm working on.

I like how the head turned out, but i need to work on the body.
