What NOT to name a Starship

Speaking of what not to name a starship, was I the only one who thought it was incredibly stupid to rename the USS Sao Paolo to USS Defiant in DS9? That pretty much directly goes against the idea that renaming a ship after christening is bad luck. It's not so much a matter of superstition as it is a matter of tradition. It was only used for one damn episode, anyway, I would have been fine with it.
