Random NPC Faction Notes

Post by Arcalane »

Faction Name: Imperial Coalition
Leader Name: ???
Faction Imagery: The Old Empire symbol, a black [+], on white for flags and banners and a white square for ship patches/badges.
Values: Integrity, Honour, Devotion to the Empire
Aim: Rebuild the Old Empire
Concept: The main NPC faction, the Coalition ideally seeks to rebuild the Old Empire through any means necessary.
History/Description: Whilst the Empire is dead, it's supporters are not. Many pine for the old days, when the Empire was in it's prime and everything was perfect. Whilst these are almost certainly false memories and wishful thinking, many are forced to admit that things were better before the Empire collapsed... but going back to the old ways may not be the best course of action.

Unfortunately, though the Coalition shines brightly on the outside, on the inside, the leaders of the core worlds are often at disagreement with each other. Rumours and intrigue surround the recent assassination of Councillor Donato, suggesting it was ordered by Councilor Llewelyn. The Coalition also strongly (and wrongly) believes that it is currently the only spacefaring faction left. They may well be in for a bit of a surprise...

Ships: Pre-Collapse/Imperial ships are large, white-armoured monsters that have enough firepower to level small colonies and stop entire fleets singlehandedly. Well, that's what the holovids said. The few surviving ships are nowhere near their former glory, but they are still a truly formidable array of opponents in their own right. To gaze upon one of these armoured warships is to look at the pinnacle of human engineering. They are always perfect mirror images if split down the center, right down to sensor array antennae.

Post-Collapse/Coalition ships are more practical and pragmatic, eschewing showmanship for cold, hard efficiency. Neat, angular lines with white and grey armour, dark metal details/internals, and a penchant for powerful particle beam weaponry backed up by missile arrays and mass-drivers. Coalition ships are occasionally assymetric unlike their predecessors, but their performance does not suffer for it at all.

In either case, the Coalition's ships hit hard, and with great accuracy, but not as frequently as others. They wipe the field clear with initial volleys, and hope that nothing has survived to return fire.
The Coalition are the designated "neutral guys". They sit in the center of the map, too mired in internal conflicts to rouse their fleets and expand any further. They maintain a series of depots, archeological sites, and other outposts, towards the outskirts of space that are infrequently the destination or source of convoys. Attacking or escorting these convoys can often pay off well.

Faction Name: Armageddon Syndicate
Leader Name: Commander Veyhar Telkai
Faction Imagery: ???
Values: Survival of the Strongest
Aim: Replace the Empire...
Concept: It's complicated!
History/Description: During the chaos of the Collapse, the charismatic mass-murderer known as Veyhar Telkai was freed from a massive high-security prison complex. The mass uprising caught the security teams with their pants down, and the inmates had control of the complex within a matter of hours. With equipment stolen from the security forces and guards, the group (now identifying itself as the Armageddon Syndicate, and lead by Veyhar) fled, bypassing an orbiting Imperial Fleet and passing through a destabilizing lane. Whilst nearly half of the Syndicate's fleet was decimated by the unstable lane, Veyhar's command ship (named the Ragnarok) survived along with a handful of transports and other vessels.

The lane sealed behind them. "Trapped" just as Veyhar had planned, the Syndicate turned their attentions to the local colonies, exerting their might over the poorly defended worlds. The Syndicate had it's first conquests. Ironically, the Syndicate essentially established a police state - a fairly benevolent one all things considered, but a police state nonetheless - and proceeded to prepare itself for the restabilizing of the lanes.

How Veyhar has survived the ravages of time and kept his youthful complexion is unknown, but it is certain that he hasn't changed a bit since he was incarcerated. Veyhar is a charismatic, double-dealing, back-stabbing fiend, which is quite possibly the only reason he has maintained complete control of the Syndicate to this day. The Syndicate are believed to have close ties with the ever-looming pirates, and may well be supplying them with recruits, resources, and technology, in return for the Syndicate's safety.

Ships: The Syndicate's ships are far from a pleasant sight. Their neat, angular hulls are frequently painted dark or blood red, with dark metal internals and other components. They excessively favour direct-fire kinetic weaponry like cannons and mass drivers, but they are also known to field experimental energy weapons and explosive missiles in small numbers.

Small Syndicate ships tear into their enemies like pack animals. Accuracy suffers, but rate of fire and resulting damage are high. Their weapons - often based off old industrial equipment - border on sadistic or illegal - a prime example are their "Shard Cannons" that deliver hails of metal shards into the target or other nearby ships. Larger ships, like Veyhar's Ragnarok, are closer to Coalition or Imperial ships: they hit hard, but not very often.
The Syndicate, if they aren't completely pirates, are designated Obvious Bad Guys. Dealing with Veyhar is ill-advised. The Syndicate will quite happily try to screw you over for their own gains, and have a disturbingly good relationship with the pirates... and will have a very, very bad relationship with the Coalition.
