Put On Your Hardhats, Boys

Post by Arcalane »

What're we doing here? Well, this has been looming over me for a while. The hurried nature of "1.0" means things aren't working as smoothly as they could be.

So, 2.0...

I'll outline the plan. It's a bit different to the current round.

Anyway, here's how the plot goes. It's a bit old and tired as a concept, but hey, so is nearly everything by now.

The Terran Empire has been in a slow decline for centuries, and has finally collapsed. The Emperor is dead, the Senators have scattered, and the planets are largely under individual rule and martial law is widespread, as are riots and dissent.

In the power vacuum, several new factions (henceforth referred to as "houses") have sprung up, all squabbling over the ruins. Who, where and what made these houses?
  • The senators have re-emerged from their hiding places, and not all of them are inclined to re-establish the Old Empire...
  • Ex-Imperial Navy personnel have gone rogue, and decided that now is the time to show that they have what it takes to rule...
  • Wealthy and charismatic corporate leaders have pulled their assets together, declared ownership, and seek to establish a new system...
  • Opportunistic pirate lords have jumped in and seized the reins, commandeering the disorganized planets for their own ends...
  • Pioneering scientists have decided to use their smarts for the greater good, reuniting people with their inventions and state of the art technology...
  • And possibly more!
The reasons for each faction don't matter. What does matter is that each faction will be under player control, and each may have a single owner, or several players - a leader and his advisors, a committee, whatever.

Each faction is responsible for itself, it's own ship designs, and everything else. There will be much more emphasis on the roleplay side of things. NPC factions will be pretty low key (pirates, a couple of neutral houses, some kind of Old Imperialist Core faction) and not such an important focus.

Each faction will have it's own private forum, where it's members can meet to discuss their next move, plan ship designs, handle movement, and keep tabs on their resources.

Speaking of which, you'll only be able to see enemy resources/ships/etc. if you go on intel missions or have ships in the same system or some kind of shared-vision treaty/whatever.

Resourcing; to keep things simple, but nevertheless suitably restricted, systems will generate some kind of resources (funding, of course) that you need to use in order to buy/build ships and suchlike. Ship costs will probably be a bit more complex than the current meta, which is why we need to plan ahead and establish some kind of system ahead of time.

A final note; all of this will be occuring on a seperate forum that's pretty much dedicated. Where that is? That's something to figure out later, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

For now, we just need to get the ball rolling.

So...

I want to hear all of your ideas. If something big hits you, make a new thread. If it's relevant to something else, post there first. Anything goes, and I really do mean anything, as long as it's simple enough for something of this scale.
