This is an excellent point. Perhaps you should change this, Vidboi.

hmmm, i know why it does that (tan45=1, and the effect of deviation is 1-tan(dev./2)) and frankly i hadn't expected anyone to make a weapon with that much deviation, as i rather strongly breaks the common sense rule (how often does a bullet turn a right angle immediately after being fired from a gun?) as would the ridiculously long reload time

admittedly, looking now there are many improvements that could be made to the calculator, however it still functions to a certain extent. as you say, it has rather become an arms race to find the most overpowering weapon, but that's not necessarily beams, which are actually less energy efficient than any other weapon

as it is, i myself feel that i was too eager to wade in a little too far with this without more testing and evaluating, but it's still been pretty fun for me and it's drawn a fair bit of life back to the forums, if only in one thread :P i suppose the competition would be fairer if the ships weren't posted publically, but how many people would've joined if they couldn't see that other people were actively participating? and nonetheless, everything may end up different to expected in the actual tournament, you never know

I don't know about the calculator exploits but as for posting, why not have people just post their ship pictures, and pm the stats only to you. Because yes, I did download some of the ships to see what damage range people were using and it was way higher than I thought so there is definitely room for people to build to others stats.
Maybe the better solution would be after each match giving a bit of time for people to retune their equipment. That way they've seen the battle outcome, so they know they need a stronger shield or faster reload, but not what the enemy's actual stats are.

I have downloaded and fought other peoples ships but, I haven't changed my stats to make my ships better than theirs and probably won't ever do that.

ok, sorry for the long delay, but i've been wiped recently

anyway, ships:

pyrophage: the ion thrusters on the ship exceed the power limit on the mountings (400) you'll either have to use more, smaller thrusters or make the thrusters smaller. also, i added up the mass and power you've stated in the specs and a. you've got a lot left over (not sure if you were aware of this) and b. the speed, accel and turning come out higher for me (0.88, 0.07 and 1.32 respectively)

Ggngunner: the stats seem to be all correct, and the ships check out too, that's great

Destroyer#1: the power consumtion for the cruiser comes out as 25 too much for me, you'll have to get that sorted and i think you've missed setting the hp for a section or a couple, as the total armour mass comes out as 5315.70 in the shipmaker. the section hp on the corvette is also very high =/

ok entrants updated on the first post, if i've missed anyone off, please let me know and i'll update it asap

i'll also not be online until some time monday, so you've got all weekend to update and enter ships. i'd like to start the actual competition next weekend, so being prompt would be most helpful

I was thinking about entering this contest, but my designs even severely watered-down would be to the contest's baseline what the First Ones would be to the League of Non-Aligned Worlds. I couldn't design for my favored DC1 control scheme, either. Either way, I've not felt a need for shipbuilding in a while anyway. This thread is still fun to watch!Image

Can the HV Rocket Launcher be added to the weapon list, or does that not work well with your calculations?

I hoped someone would pick up on the theme! Lobster-Ships! Your Mission, REVENGE for a hundred billion seafood dinners! Lol.

Honestly, I feel like either everyone else is exploiting some trick or my ships are prettier than they are functional* because Starstruck's corvettes are just demolishing mine. Not pretty. I really hate to whine but is it possible that the weapons are broken?

(no doubt due to the time I spent on aesthetics as compared to weapon choice)

Anyway, the Cancer Class Capital-Killer Corvette. (I'll post the .shp later.)
Image
Spoiler!
Size: 55
Mass: 3025
Energy :1210

Mounts: 1 heavy static
1 heavy mobile

Engine

700 mass chemical thruster (300 energy)
Speed: 2.48
Accel: .06
Turn: .5

Weapons

x1 Crab Cannon (kudos for the reference) (180 mass, 400 energy)

Sheild
Hp:700 (700 m/e)
Regen: .5 (25 m/e)

Armor :1995 (1995 mass)
I may try my hand at entering another theme set. Would that be welcome?

Well I'm not sure what tricks others are pulling but maybe once Vidboi has had time to look at all of them he will call common sense on some of the weapons. There are undoubtedly some potential exploits centered around each of the weapon types. Bullet speed for instance. But thats excel for you. The shields are also pretty much invincible but as I was told this is to facilitate weapons creativity and ship maneuverability instead of a immobile fortress spamming missiles.

Question: are rotating sections allowed so long as they are within the size ring of the ship?
Incidentally I'm done with both ships, just running through the balance again to make sure I didn't mess anything up ;) Stupid BSF is suddenly using 100% of my cpu so testing is pretty much impossible.

Starstruck's corvettes are still using the old broken beam rules.
